A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO EXAMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF CONDUCTING A STUDY
FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A MAJOR WATERWAY TRANSPORTATION
SYSTEM, TO INCLUDE NUMEROUS FACTORS CONTAINED HEREIN.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has maintained the development and implementation of a
balanced, integrated, and multimodal transportation system as a critical priority; and
WHEREAS, the vast waterways in and around the City's boundaries pose a major asset to the
continued expansion of an efficient transportation apparatus, and the use of such waterways has yet
to be fully explored by the City, particularly considering the ever-growing number of persons using
public transportation in the City; and
WHEREAS, the implementation of a major waterway transportation system will both compliment
the increasingly congested rail and highway networks within the City, but also pose viable alternatives
to these modes while simultaneously increasing their efficiencies; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to examine the viability of a major waterway
transportation system, and directs the City Administration to develop and conduct a study for such
system; and
WHEREAS, the proposed study should include, but not be limited to, a focus on the following
factors: manatee protection and no wake zone and safety considerations; existing ports and marinas
and those in varying stages of development; the systems relationship with Miami -Dade County and
surrounding municipalities; the use of various vessel types and the environmental impacts of each;
and the systems overall connectivity with other forms of existing and proposed transport such as the
Metro Rail, Metro Bus, and trolley network;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
