HomeMy WebLinkAboutLegislationCity of Miami Legislation Resolution City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov,com File Number: 16-00259 Final Action Date; A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO EXAMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF CONDUCTING A STUDY FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A MAJOR WATERWAY TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM, TO INCLUDE NUMEROUS FACTORS CONTAINED HEREIN. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has maintained the development and implementation of a balanced, integrated, and multimodal transportation system as a critical priority; and WHEREAS, the vast waterways in and around the City's boundaries pose a major asset to the continued expansion of an efficient transportation apparatus, and the use of such waterways has yet to be fully explored by the City, particularly considering the ever-growing number of persons using public transportation in the City; and WHEREAS, the implementation of a major waterway transportation system will both compliment the increasingly congested rail and highway networks within the City, but also pose viable alternatives to these modes while simultaneously increasing their efficiencies; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to examine the viability of a major waterway transportation system, and directs the City Administration to develop and conduct a study for such system; and WHEREAS, the proposed study should include, but not be limited to, a focus on the following factors: manatee protection and no wake zone and safety considerations; existing ports and marinas and those in varying stages of development; the systems relationship with Miami -Dade County and surrounding municipalities; the use of various vessel types and the environmental impacts of each; and the systems overall connectivity with other forms of existing and proposed transport such as the Metro Rail, Metro Bus, and trolley network; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission directs the City Administration to examine the feasibility of conducting a study related to the implementation of a major waterway transportation system within the City, to include a focus on the factors contained herein. Section 3. Footnotes : (1 ) This Resolution shall become effective as specified herein unless vetoed by the Mayor within ten (10) days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission or upon the effective date stated herein, whichever is later.
