From: Jeff Shlmonskl jeff@tropicaldesigns.com Subject: Re: Samanea Saman In Morningside Date: January 15, 2007 at 10:09 To: Elvis Cruz elviscruz@mac.com Hi Elvis, In regards to your query about the use of Samanea saman as a street tree in Miami, I believe this tree to be an excellent choice. While I know of no large trees currently growing In our area, this may be entirely due to cold weather limitations as Samanea will not tolerate frost. Since I have not seen any instances of a hard frost In Miami for the past decade, It may be time to test these trees In our conditions. I have seen Samanea saman used very successfully in medians and alongside highways in Singapore, Malaysia, Venezuela, and Costa Rica. I do not expect a Samanea to attain such large stature here as in tropical countries because of the paucity of nutrients In our soil, less rainfall, and certainly cooler temperatures in the winter. As with any new planting, proper site preparation and tree installation is critical to not only growing any tree well, but also keeping it in the ground during high winds. Samanea saman should not shed branches very easily in a storm because of its hard and strong wood. If the soil in the vicinity of the planted tree is fairly porous and not compacted, the tree should root downwards and be well anchored to withstand high winds. If planted into a small hole dug into structural or compacted fill, large surface roots will develop because the tree has difficulty rooting Into the soil below. This of course is an issue with most if not all trees. If the soil is too hard and compacted roots will follow the easiest route to moisture and that is usually the interface between a slab of concrete or asphalt and the compacted fill below. Don't blame the tree on pushing up sidewalks or the road; blame the poor soil conditions that it was planted into in the first place. One further point about this tree is that the canopy adrriits light to pass through it allowing grass or other plants to grow below. This is a great landscape feature. By the way, the fruit can be quite sweet too. I am very familiar with this tree species, Samanea saman. I have personally seen hundreds of specimens planted and thriving as street trees In Jamaca, Barbados, Brazil, India, Thailand, Honolulu, etc. I have seen them planted in medians exactly like this one, and they looked magnificent.. I personally planted the original trees as well as the replacement trees, including the specific trees in question, which was on February 2, 2015, over 9 months ago. As for why the two previous trees declined and died, it is my expert opinion that they were killed by the regular application of a solution of glyphosate and ammonium sulfate herbicide which Elvis Cruz used to kill the grass and weeds around the trunk of the tree. I state this with confidence because there are two other Samanea saman trees in this median, which were also in decline, but once the herbicide treatment stopped they recovered and are thriving once again. Moreover, There was a similar situation at the University of Miami, where they sprayed around the Hurricane palms that were surrounding the university on Campo Sano Avenue and they had to be removed due to glyphosate damage. I am convinced that the two new trees, now that they are no longer being treated with an herbicide, will continue to grow vigorously. To reinforce that conviction, in the spirit of compromise, I hereby agree that if any of these new trees dies I will replace it with a tree of the City's choice, completely free of charge. In closing, Samanea saman is an excellent tree to plant in this iocation. It provides plentiful shade, is hurricane resistant and has attractive pink blossoms, and now that the problem has been identified and removed, the new trees will thrive. D. 73re'ruuin Cansufting Inc. 305-323-7342 It was great seeing you at the Treemendous Miami, picnic on Key Biscayne recently. Thanks for including me in the discussion about the saman trees in your neighborhood. Albizia samanea saman, are used in tropical areas across the globe as a street tree. As you know the state of Florida champion tree is at the Montgomery Botanical Center in Coral Gables. Two years ago I was part of a team that wanted to move another tree that was know to be over 80 years old, in Fort Lauderdale. I have done extensive research into the specie. Any thing that could be said bad about the Saman could be said about nearly any tropical tree. It does not grow like the lebbeck its invasive cousin. Leaf structure is similar but growth pattern is much slower, and does not produce as many seedpods as the lebbeck. (woman's tongue) This is a fine tree and could and should be used more as a street tree. Yours in arboriculture, Robert D. The e-mail exchange indicates that we have a "storm in a tea cup!" Is this a personal vendetta or is it truly a question of horticultural concern? I am puzzled that we have the complaint about REMOVING two Samanea saman (Syn. Albizzia saman) trees that are established and growing well in the location (which I have not seen). These trees have proved to be reliable (i.e., few pests and diseases, and relatively hurricane -resistant because of their sturdy tree architecture) as well as attractive in the landscape. Even though Samanea saman is native to the tropical areas of C. and S. America, the trees thrive in parks and along roadsides. In Sri Lanka, some of these magnificent trees that line main arterial roads, are over 100 years old. They also grace private gardens from from Kauai, Oahu, and Maui to Cairns and Brisbane, as well as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand plus many other areas in S. and S.E. Asia. This species of Albizzia (includes up to 150 different trees, shrubs and vines) is a large tree, and if correctly planted have proven their worth in many different countries and environments. That is why they are so popular. Samanea saman also produces attractive pink, funnel -shaped, powder -puff -like flowers that comprise bundles of stamens. The flowers produce nectar for bees, as well as fruit for animals and birds that inhabit its majestic canopy. / hove ab. o/ufe/v no negative C`; 7'r'r'rP'Y'7'F"rtS about this tre', and would go so far" as to Suggest that we plant many more qf these s r`rlendid trees along some of our roads and freeways in Miami -Dade County. They can develop into large trees, so they require adequate space. The Tropical Flowering Tree Society has planted many of these specimens along the main entrance to Zoo Miami. Once established, they require little extra attention because in their native habitat they thrive in the dry lowlands as well as coastal bush areas. Yes, they are susceptible to frost damage, but a large healthy tree can recover quickly. Also with climate change (global warming) we have not had any bad freezes in our area for many years. So please do not cut these trees down —especially in a city like Miami that has a very low tree canopy. Thank you!
