HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-16-0081City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-16-0081 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 16-00277 Final Action Date: 2/25/2016 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING CONGRESS TO ALLOCATE FUNDING FOR FIREFIGHTER CANCER RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SYLVESTER COMPREHENSIVE CENTER; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, Firefighters suffer a higher rate of cancer, especially respiratory and digestive cancers, compared to the general population, according to a large-scale, multi -year study led by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; and WHEREAS, the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Center has announced a new research partnership with the Miami -Dade County Fire Department and the Palm Beach County Fire Department; and WHEREAS, the partnership will be the first study focused not only on defining the risks of cancer posed to firefighters but also on finding ways to reduce the risk and shield firefighters from absorbing the dangerous chemicals associated with their jobs; and WHEREAS, the State of Florida has allocated nearly one million dollars ($1,000,000.00) in funding to this partnership; and WHEREAS, this funding will only support the partnership for one (1) year; and WHEREAS, the City Commission urges Congress to fund firefighter cancer research at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Center; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Resolution. Section 2. The City Commission directs the City Clerk to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the members of the Florida Congressional Delegation and the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. Section 3. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission or upon date stated herein, whichever is later.
