Law Department Matter ID No.15-2079 An Ordinance authorizing the City Manager to take all administrative actions necessary to effectuate the naming of the Trail at Virginia Key Beach North Point Park located at 4020 Virginia Beach Drive as the "Mabel Miller Walking Trail." Background Information: The Department of Parks and Recreation recommends the naming of the Trail, in honor of Mabel Fentress Miller for her lifelong dedication to environmental restoration and education. Mabel Miller is a former MDCPS educator who has devoted her life to restoring Virginia Key to its natural state and preserving both Virginia Key and Key Biscayne. She tirelessly worked to educate the masses on their importance to the environment. Mrs. Miller was a major advocate and driving force behind the Virginia Key revitalization and the restoration projects that still take place to date. Summary: o Mabel is a former MDCPS educator who devoted her life to restoring Virginia Key to its natural state. o She was a major advocate and driving force behind the Virginia Key revitalization and restoration projects that still take place today. o She founded "Friends of Virginia Key" a group who started the movement to restore Virginia Key. o Mabel's 37 years as a science teacher and environmental education specialist contributed to the development of thousands of students.
