A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR
A PUBLIC BAYWALK CONNECTING THE NORTH AND SOUTH PORTIONS OF
THE WATERFRONT UNDERNEATH THE 1-395 ("SIGNATURE BRIDGE") AND
URGING THE METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION AND THE FLORIDA
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO ADOPT A BAYWALK WITHIN THE
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SIGNATURE BRIDGE PROJECT; AND DIRECTING
THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE
OFFICIALS DESIGNATED HEREIN.
WHEREAS, a public baywalk connecting Museum Park to the south and the former Miami Herald
building site to the north underneath the 1-395 expressway would allow for enhanced connectivity to
Biscayne Bay's waterfront within the City of Miami for the benefit of pedestrians, residents and tourists;
and
WHEREAS, the new signature bridge project will be undertaken starting in January 2017 in order
to improve connectivity, upgrade roadways, and enhance the visual quality of the 1-395; and
WHEREAS, creating a baywalk underneath this new signature bridge project would provide a new
access point for the community to enjoy Biscayne Bay and provide continued connectivity from
Bayfront Park to the former Miami Herald building site; and
WHEREAS, providing a baywalk promenade allows for increased usage of the vibrant waterfront
and public spaces within our Downtown;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby supports a public baywalk connecting the north and
south portions of the waterfront underneath the 1-395 and urges the Metropolitan Planning
OrganizatiQn and the Florida Department of Transportation to adopt a baywalk within the
implementation of the signature bridge project.
Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the members
of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, to Jim Boxold, the Secretary of the Florida Department of
Transportation, and to Gus Pego, the District Six Secretary of the Florida Department Transportation.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1}

{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
