AN ORDINANCE OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AMENDING CHAPTER
38/ARTICLE I OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED,
ENTITLED "PARKS AND RECREATION/IN GENERAL", BY ESTABLISHING A NEW
SECTION 38-18 ENTITLED "NAMING OF FACILITIES AT HADLEY PARK",
THEREBY RENAMING THE MILLER J. DAWKINS OLYMPIC SWIMMING POOL
COMPLEX IN HADLEY PARK TO THE "MILLER J. AND NANCY S. DAWKINS
OLYMPIC SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX"; CONTAINING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE
AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has named the pool complex at Hadley Park, "The Miller J.
Dawkins Olympic Swimming Pool Complex" after the late City Commissioner Miller J. Dawkins; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Dawkin's widow, Nancy, is well regarded in the community for her
decades as an educator for the Miami -Dade County Public School System, her tireless activism for the
Liberty City community, and for her educational initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Dawkin's contributions have resulted in her receiving such accolades as the
Dade Heritage Trust Plaque for Outstanding Contribution in Promoting Commemorative Services, the
Miami Police Department's Recognition Plaque for Community Service and the Metropolitan Dade
County Appreciation Plaque from former Mayor Stephen P. Clark; and
WHEREAS, on March 25, 2009, Nancy Dawkins was recognized at the United States House of
Representatives for her many civic achievements;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. Chapter 38/Article I, of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, is amended
in the following particulars:{1}

Secs. 38-18 38 /5. Reserved Naming of facilities at Hadley Park.
(a) Reserved.
(b) The swimming pool complex at Hadley Park shall be known as The Miller J. and Nancy S.
Dawkins Olympic Swimming Pool Complex.
(_c) Reserved.
Secs. 38-19-38-45. Reserved.
Section 2. If any section, part of a section, paragraph, clause, phrase or word of this Ordinance is
declared invalid, the remaining provisions of this Ordinance shall not be affected.
Section 3. This Ordinance shall become effective thirty (30) days after final reading and adoption
thereof. {2}

{2} This Ordinance shall become effective as specified herein unless vetoed by the Mayor within ten
(10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Ordinance, it
shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission or upon the
effective date stated herein, whichever is later.
