HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-15-0281City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-15-0281 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 15-00860 Final Action Date: 6/25/2015 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE TO REMOVE THE CONFEDERATE FLAG FROM ALL GOVERNMENT INSTALLATIONS AND FACILITIES WITHIN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE GOVERNOR OF SOUTH CAROLINA, THE PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. WHEREAS, residents of the City of Miami mourn with all South Carolinians the tragic deaths of nine (9) people in the senseless shooting at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in the historic City of Charleston South Carolina; and WHEREAS, the Confederate Battle Flag on the State House grounds is to many a symbol, not of bravery and courage, but rather of an era of slavery and oppression; and WHEREAS, the current placement of that flag in a place of special honor on the South Carolina State House grounds is believed by many to be a divisive issue erecting unnecessary barriers of understanding and unity among our citizens; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission respectfully urges the South Carolina Legislature to remove the Confederate Battle Flag from the South Carolina Statehouse grounds. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Lieutenant Governor Henry D. McMaster, President of the South Carolina Senate and James H. "Jay" Lucas, Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Section 4.
