A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION RESPECTFULLY
REQUESTING THE SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE TO REMOVE THE
CONFEDERATE FLAG FROM ALL GOVERNMENT INSTALLATIONS AND
FACILITIES WITHIN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA; DIRECTING THE CITY
CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE GOVERNOR OF
SOUTH CAROLINA, THE PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE AND
THE SPEAKER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, residents of the City of Miami mourn with all South Carolinians the tragic deaths
of nine (9) people in the senseless shooting at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in the historic City of
Charleston South Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the Confederate Battle Flag on the State House grounds is to many a symbol, not
of bravery and courage, but rather of an era of slavery and oppression; and
WHEREAS, the current placement of that flag in a place of special honor on the South
Carolina State House grounds is believed by many to be a divisive issue erecting unnecessary
barriers of understanding and unity among our citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted
and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
