SUBJECT: Police Department Hiring and
Staffing Update
As per the request of the City Commission during the October 10, 2013, City Commission meeting, I
present this memorandum, which outlines the Police Department's manpower allocation and hiring
progress.
The Miami Police Department is currently operating with 121 sworn vacancies. There are 8 sworn members
of the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2015.
The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress since the June 11, 2015, City
Commission meeting:

Status
Police Officer
•
Forty (40) applicants hired year-to-date in 2015.
•
Eleven (11) applicants hired since last City Commission meeting.
•
Twelve (12) applicants awaiting medical clearance.
•
Processing 148 police officer applicants from April 6-9, 2015 orientation,
and April 23, 2015 orientation.
Crime Scene
•
Four (4) Crime Scene Investigator 1 applicants undergoing Background
Investigator I
process (expected to be hired by June-2015, if they pass all pre -employment
hurdles).
Emergency
•
Thirteen (13) Emergency Dispatcher applicants undergoing polygraph
Dispatcher
testing (expected to be hired by June- 2015, if they pass all pre -employment
hurdles).
The table on page 2 is a snapshot of the Police Department's hiring progress and staffing levels from
December 2014 through May 2015.

reported during specific months, due to non -finalised payroll actions. The "Separated" and "Hired" levels will change retroactively each month now to
reflect the previously reported levels that may have taken place after the reporting period.
*The Vacant numbers only reflect an estimate and are subject to change slightly, depending on personnel actions occurring but not finalized during the
month reported, specifically those personnel actions that have not cleared payroll as of the date of the report.
