SUBJECT: Police Department Hiring and
Staffing Update
As per the request of the City Commission during the October 10, 2013, City Commission meeting, I
present this memorandum, which outlines the Police Department's manpower allocation and hiring
progress.
The Miami Police Department is currently operating with 114 sworn vacancies. There are 9 sworn members
of the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2015.
The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress since the April 23, 2015, City
Commission meeting:
Position
Status
Police Officer
•
Twenty-six (26) applicants hired year-to-date in 2015.
•
Two (2) applicants hired since last City Commission meeting.
•
Two (2) applicants awaiting medical clearance.
•
Processing 216 police officer applicants from April 6-9, 2015 orientation,
and April 23, 2015 orientation.
•
Police officer applicants on new list began physical agility testing the week
of April 13, 2015.
Crime Scene
•
Twelve (12) Crime Scene Investigator I applicants undergoing polygraph -
Investigator I
testing (expected to be hired by May 15, 2015, if they pass all pre-
employment hurdles).
Emergency
•
Nine (9) Emergency Dispatcher applicants undergoing polygraph testing
Dispatcher
(expected to be hired by May 15, 2015, if they pass all pre -employment
hurdles).
The table on page 2 is a snapshot of the Police Department's hiring progress and staffing levels from April
2014 through April 2015.
