Why Container Deposit Legislation?
• 490 Beverage containers recycled per capita in
11 states with deposits, 190 beverage containers
recycled per capita in states without deposits
(2002 report, BEAR)
• In Michigan, deposits laws reduced
beverage container litter by 84 % and total
litter by 41% (Michigan DOT).
• New Yorkers have saved the energy equivalent of
25 million barrels of oil — enough energy to
provide electricity to all the homes in New York
City for one year (NYPIRG).

Relieve landfill space - Franklin Associates, Ltdcredited
container deposit laws in NY for a 72% annual reduction in the volume of discarded
beverage containers, from 47.5 million cubic feet to 13.1 million cubic feet
Alleviate storm drain cleanup - City of Miami
spends $4.5 million per year to clean storm drains, which are predominantly
congested with beverage containers.

Decrease cost of recycling - TheCitYof
Cincinnati reported that container deposits coupled with curbside
recycling could reduce the cost of recycling from $94 per ton to $72 per
ton; $22 savings X 823,229 tons recycled in Miami -Dade county = $18.1
million per year savings
Resale of recycled materials - Aluminum cans
are the most profitable, Miami -Dade County collected 30,397 tons X
$760 per ton ($0.38 per lb X 2000 lbs.) = $23.1 million
Unredeemed deposits
Massachusetts Department of Revenue collected $62.5 million from
unredeemed deposits between 1990 and 1996
Governor Rell of Connecticut estimates income of $24.4 million
annually from unclaimed deposits
