HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-14-0452City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-14-0452 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 14-01180 Final Action Date: 11/20/2014 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 12TH STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 12TH AVENUE TO SOUTHWEST 14TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "ERNESTO DIAZ MADRUGA WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, at the age of twenty two (22), Ernesto Diaz Madruga was a young worker at the Central Corazon de Jesus in Cuba, and a member of the "Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil"; and WHEREAS, Ernesto Diaz Madruga strived for political change in Cuba, but was met with unjust retribution and ultimately sentenced to twenty (20) years of forced labor imprisonment for his views in opposition of the communist regime; and WHEREAS, during his sentence, he resisted the forced labor involved in the Camilo Cienfuegos Work Plan being imposed upon prisoners, and met an untimely death at the hands of the communist regime; and WHEREAS, on August 9, 1964, at the Isla de Pinos, Cuba, Ernesto Diaz Madruga became the first Martyr of the forced labor camps of Cuba; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Southwest 12th Street from Southwest 12th Avenue to Southwest 14th Avenue, Miami, Florida, is codesignated as "Ernesto Diaz Madruga Way." Section 3. The City Manager is directed to instruct the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the City of Miami Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste, as well as the Miami -Dade County Public Works/Waste Management Department and the United States Postal Service. Section 4.
