A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DESIGNATING NORTHEAST 3
STREET FROM NORTHEAST 1 AVENUE TO NORTHEAST 2 AVENUE, MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS "BERLIN WALL WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICES.
WHEREAS, the Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic
("GDR") starting on August 13, 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East
Germany and East Berlin; and
WHEREAS, the wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked East
Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post World War II period; and
WHEREAS, before the wall was erected, 3.5 million East Germans defected from the GDR,
many crossing over the border from East Berlin into West Berlin, from where they could then travel to
West Germany and other Western European countries; and
WHEREAS, the wall came to symbolize the "Iron Curtain" that separated Western Europe and
the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, in 1989, a series of radical political changes occurred in the Eastern Bloc,
associated with the liberalization of the Eastern Bloc's authoritarian systems, and the erosion of
political power in the pro -Soviet governments in nearby Poland and Hungary; and
WHEREAS, during and shortly after November, 1989, euphoric crowds consisting of citizens
of both East and West Berlin climbed onto the wall and began celebrating; and
WHEREAS, the government later used industrial equipment to remove most of what was left
of the wall after the citizens had chipped away at it; and
WHEREAS, the fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which formally
concluded on October 3, 1990; and
WHEREAS, the government of Germany has kindly donated a piece of the original wall to be
placed in the City of Miami at Miami -Dade College, Wolfson Center;
