City of Miami Legislation Resolution City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 14-01033 Final Action Date: A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DESIGNATING NORTHEAST 3 STREET FROM NORTHEAST 1 AVENUE TO NORTHEAST 2 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "BERLIN WALL WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMITA COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, the Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic ("GDR") starting on August 13, 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and East Berlin; and WHEREAS, the wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked East Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post World War II period; and WHEREAS, before the wall was erected, 3.5 million East Germans defected from the GDR, many crossing over the border from East Berlin into West Berlin, from where they could then travel to West Germany and other Western European countries; and WHEREAS, the wall came to symbolize the "Iron Curtain" that separated Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War; and WHEREAS, in 1989, a series of radical political changes occurred in the Eastern Bloc, associated with the liberalization of the Eastern Bloc's authoritarian systems, and the erosion of political power in the pro -Soviet governments in nearby Poland and Hungary; and WHEREAS, during and shortly after November, 1989, euphoric crowds consisting of citizens of both East and West Berlin climbed onto the wall and began celebrating; and WHEREAS, the government later used industrial equipment to remove most of what was left of the wall after the citizens had chipped away at it; and WHEREAS, the fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which formally concluded on October 3, 1990; and WHEREAS, the government of Germany has kindly donated a piece of the original wall to be placed in the City of Miami at Miami -Dade College, Wolfson Center; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this section. Section 2. Section 3. The City Manager is directed to instruct the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, Miami -Dade County Public Works and Waste Management, and the United States Postal Service. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{1} APPRaVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: VIC+fi©RIA EENDEZ CITY ATTORNEY Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted.
