HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-14-0387City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-14-0387 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 14-00938a Final Action Date: 9/29/2014 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE 113TH UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO ENACT THE "ALL-AMERICAN FLAG ACT" TO REQUIRE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO BUY ONLY AMERICAN FLAGS THAT ARE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT (100%) MANUFACTURED IN THE UNITED STATES, FROM ARTICLES, MATERIALS, OR SUPPLIES ONE HUNDRED PERCENT (100%) OF WHICH ARE GROWN, PRODUCED, OR MANUFACTURED IN THE UNITED STATES; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE ELECTED OFFICIALS AS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, the American flag is one of our nation's greatest symbols and it is only fitting that we honor our veterans and express our patriotism by supporting American workers and businesses; and WHEREAS, the estimated value of American flags imported into the United States in 2012 was $3.8 million, including $3.6 million from China; and WHEREAS, under current law, the United States government can buy flags that are only made of only fifty percent (50%) American -made materials; and WHEREAS, the AII-American Flag Act would require the federal government to purchase flags that contain one hundred percent (100%) American -made materials, entirely manufactured in the United States; and WHEREAS, the AII-American Flag Act would directly benefit American workers and businesses; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission would like to express its support for the American flag and all it stands for and urge Congress to enact the AII-American Flag Act; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges the members of 113th United States Congress to enact the AII-American Flag Act to require the federal government to buy only American flags that are one hundred percent (100%) manufactured in the United States, from articles, materials, or supplies one hundred percent (100%) of which are grown, produced, or manufactured in the United States. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senators Bill Nelson City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File Id: 14-00938a (Version: 1) Printed On: 1/12/2018 File Number: 14-00938a Enactment Number: R-14-0387 and Marco Rubio, to all the members of the United States Congress, to the Miami -Dade League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities, the Miami -Dade Delegation, Mayor Carlos Gimenez and to the Miami -Dade County Board of Commissioners. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{1} Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
