At the age of 21 she joined the Society of the Sacred Heart. She was the principal of the Sacred Heart School in Santiago de Cuba and later in. El Cerro, Havana. When Castro took hold of power he impounded all the catholic schools in Cuba and she was force to exile. Upon arrival in Miami, Mother Miranda resided and taught at The Carrolton School of the Sacred Heart in Coconut Grove. Sister Miranda was soon concerned about the situation of the children wandering the streets after school finished, while their parents were at work. She, along with a group of volunteers comprised of her former students from Cuba, began donating their time and talents to the Little Havana community surrounding Fourth Avenue and Fourth Street. Each afternoon, Miranda Otero and her volunteers gathered in the shade of a tree outside the Ada Merritt School (660 SW 3rd St.) to stimulate and care for neighbored children who would otherwise go home alone. With a few bats and balls, some books and a tad of patience and creativity, Miranda Otero's informal "after -school program" quickly expanded to classrooms within the Ada Merritt School, where along with English and religion, cultural activities including music, art and dance were taught. Soon enough, with a formal name in homage to the Virgin Mary (Mater Admirabilis) patroness of the religious of the Sacred Heart, Centro Mater was born. 41& Southwest 4 Avenue, Miami, FL - Google Maps Page 1 of 1 Google Address 418 SW 4th Ave Miami, FL 33130 99 a SW 1St of rn n th m n r m 'a SW 2nd St WO co S a a el SW 3rd St $t a rn South Miami.e., Massage Therapy'5th St 200 20 Miami Bldg & rm, 'toning Dept SW Ath St +'....
