GOLDMAN PROPERTIES
TONY GOLDMAN,
Founder, Goldman Properties
Urbanist...Community Developer...Entrepreneur
Goldman Properties was the vision of one man, Tony Goldman, a modern American pioneer. Tony was
an entrepreneur, a historic preservationist, a romantic and sensitive developer, a restaurateur, a
hotelier and a patron of the arts. He had an unparalleled drive, a creative spirit that knew no boundaries
and a deep devotion to family and friends. At the core, Tony was an artist. His canvas was the neglected
urban neighborhoods of the United States which he transformed into thriving international destinations,
his masterpieces. Above all he was an original, utterly fearless, thinker, dreamer and doer. He was a
once in a lifetime individual. Tony Goldman died as he lived, with courage, dignity and love on
September, 11th, 2012. Our world will never be the same, but he certainly left it much more beautiful
and far richer for all.
For forty years, Tony Goldman, founder and chairman of Goldman Properties, recognized the value in
depressed, undervalued urban areas, reconstructing and transforming declining historic districts into
popular, thriving global destinations. Goldman has been recognized as the driving force behind the
transformations of the Upper West Side, the Wall Street Financial District and Soho in New York City,
Center City in Philadelphia, South Beach in Miami Beach; most recently undertaking the transformation
of the warehouse district in Wynwood, Miami's emerging arts district. Goldman's uncanny instinct for
recognizing urban trends went hand in hand with his creative approach to revitalizing down trodden
neighborhoods. The synergy of his multifaceted approach became his hallmark. He translated the
pioneer's excitement of discovery into sound financial investments, while respecting, enhancing and
embellishing the historic architecture of all the districts he undertakes.
In 1968, Goldman began the Company with one employee, developing residential brownstones on the
Upper Westside of New York City. In the mid '70s, Goldman was drawn to the architectural district
known as Soho. He bought and renovated 18 buildings, the flagship being the Soho Building. In 2000,
Goldman's luxury loft condominium development, the Lofts of Greene Street opened and sold out.
Trendsetting shops, restaurants and art galleries sprouted up alongside artists' lofts and living spaces.
In 1985, Goldman discovered South Beach. Recognizing the architecturally significant community of Art
Deco buildings, he purchased .18 properties. He _led the South Beach movement to revitalize through
preservation and economic development, and, in 1987, the Park Central hotel was re -envisioned,
opened and became the centerpiece of the South Beach renaissance. The New York Times dubbed
Goldman "the granddaddy of South Beach, who time and again is credited with recognizing the potential
in the crumbling pastel treasures of Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue." In 1998, Goldman renovated The
Hotel of South Beach, formerly known as the Tiffany, with his daughter Jessica and innovative designer
Todd Oldham, garnering numerous awards and rave reviews from design pundits worldwide.
In 1994, Goldman developed the village of Wall Street, investing in nine properties and breathing new
life into New York City's suffering financial district, including the historic American Bank Note building,
which Goldman restored to its former grandeur, positioning it on the National Register and New York
City's list of Landmark properties. In 2002, Goldman restored five historical properties in the heart of the
Stone Street Historic District, with living lofts above stores and restaurants. In 1999, Goldman invested
in 25 distressed properties in the downtown Center City district of Philadelphia. His first renovations
included the neighborhood's centerpiece, The Philadelphia Building, and the buildings along 13th street.
Today, the area houses innovative restaurants, cafes, upscale boutiques and loft spaces for young
urbanites.
2005 marked the discovery of Wynwood in Midtown Miami, a warehouse district with an emerging arts
community. Acquiring 25 properties, Goldman oversaw a master plan to create an artistically driven,
tasteful and architecturally exciting pedestrian neighborhood. Launching at Art Basel 2009, Tony in
collaboration with art guru, Jeffrey Deitch, presented Wynwood Walls, a mural park featuring the work
of leading international street artists that continues to evolve. It is flanked by the acclaimed Joey's
Italian Cafe, opened by son Joey and Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, a blend of exciting contemporary street
art and innovative global -Latino cuisine, overseen by his daughter Jessica.
Goldman's many professional associations include serving as founder and chairman of Miami Beach's
Ocean Drive Association. He was a member of the National Board of Trustees of the National Trust for
Historic Preservation, and a past two -term chairman of both the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors
Bureau and the Historic Hotels of America. He received the Louise Du Pont Crowninshield Award in
2011, the highest accolade bestowed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He received the
Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce's Leonard A. "Doc" Baker Lifetime Achievement Award in June of
2012. This award is presented to an individual whose exceptional lifetime contributions of community
leadership and philanthropic endeavors have improved the quality of life of Miami Beach citizens.
Posthumously, Goldman has received a Silver Medallion award from the Miami Coalition of Christian
and Jews for exhibiting extraordinary humanitarian efforts in the community. He was also recognized by
Miami Today as a past Miami Historic Legend, and the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter
for the developer of the year award (2012).
Goldman's legacy continues with his daughter Jessica Goldman Srebnick, whom he named CEO of
Goldman Properties prior to his death.
