Subject: Pilot Program for Distressed Development Sites
Purpose of Item:
Law Department
Matter ID No.
14-989
This ordinance is intended to assist and encourage continued development in the hardship posed
during the economic downturn. This legislation will establish a pilot program to allow previously
approved development to be renewed and extended. The item passed on first reading at the July 10,
2014 City Commission meeting.
Background Information:
The economic downturn caused several properties within the City to go into bankruptcy. As these
properties emerge from bankruptcy, there were unintended consequences that have restricted the
development of such sites, which in many cases have caused the sites to remain vacant for many
years. The establishment of a pilot program for such sites will allow the renewal and extensions of
development orders so that the City can continue to encourage stable development and promote
economic viability.
