In July 1990, the department instituted a program to encourage the youth of our community to "do the
right thing." Funding is being requested for the continuation of this program, which rewards youth for
being leaders in the community, not using drugs, portraying a positive image and excelling in
education. Another benefit of this program is that it allows children, living in high -crime areas, to
interact with uniformed police officers in non -confrontational settings, thereby establishing positive
associations and enhancing mutual respect. The program directly impacts approximately 5,000
children annually through its awards program and hundreds more through community events,
activities and projects. Attached, please find program accomplishments.
The "Do The Right Thing" program has grown, since its inception, by attracting various influential
sponsors. The major sponsors includes: United Auto Insurance Company, Publix Super Markets
Charities, and Ronald McDonald House Charities all having been instrumental in the advertising and
promotion of the program. Additionally, the program is trademarked and marketed to other law
enforcement agencies nationally and internationally resulting in over fifty (50) Do The Right Thing
chapters in the United States and four chapters abroad.
