RIGHT
THING
Dear Friends of Do The Right Thing:
Another school year is in full swing, so please nominate a student, you'll
='' be "doing the right thing!" I am pleased to announce that we have just
launched a brand new website that is easier to navigate as well as
faster. Please check it out atwww.dotherikhthino1nc.org.
One of' the main issues our program struggles with each year is getting
more schools submitting Top 10-quality nominations. Each month,
DTRT selects 10 top winners out of hundreds of nominations. These
students are invited to attend a special ceremony with the Chief o
Police and top brass of the Miami Police Department at police
headquarters downtown and receive a host of prizes. It is a wonderful
experience for these students as they get to witness the police officers
_ getting their awards as well. Many of you might think that it i
difficult, if not impossible, to submit a Top 10 winner nomination
considering the hundreds we get each month. However, if you put a
little time into writing a paragraph or two with details about your
nominee, there is a good chance your student can make the Top 10.
Below is a list of tips to help you write a Top 10 winner nomination.
These tips can also he found on our website.
• Academic success or change in study habits
• Outstanding conduct or behavior
• Community service or helping neighbors
• Organizations the child belongs to and what they do
• Home conduct and help with family chores
• Participation in special events/activities
• Do they work? Where and how many hours?
• Personal problems overcome or adjusted to
• Feats of bravery or heroic acts performed
• Sports or hobbies involved in
• Turn around success stories
• Musical or artistic talents
• Physical or mental limitations overcome
• Examples of honesty and good citizenship

NEW WEBSITE!
We hope you have been able to check out our new and
improved website atHww.dotheriehtthineinc.ore.
Through our site, you can nominate students and
catch up on our latest happenings. One new
improvement of note is specifically for our Do The
Right Thing school coordinators. If anyone from your
school nominates a student, they will be asked to fill in
their coordinators email address. With a correct
coordinator email, nominations submitted will also be
mailed directly to the coordinator. This will assist
our hard working coordinators in tracking
nominations from their schools. Enjoy and happy
nominating!

Do The Right Thing is pleased to keep the memory of
Miami Police Senior Executive Assistant Angel
Calzadilla alive with a Miami Police Academy
scholarship named in his honor. The Angel Calzadilla
Police Memorial Scholarship aims to improve the life
of one Miami -Dade County high school senior
annually by giving them an opportunity to enter a
- lucrative career in law enforcement, become self
sufficient, achieve success in life and hopefully pay it
forward to others when the opportunity presents itself.
The S6,000 scholarship pays for tuition and additional
expenses necessary to attend the Miami Police
Academy and graduate as a certified police officer. By
providing this scholarship, DTRT hopes to empower
our youth and contribute to their future success. To
date, Do The Right Thing has awarded scholarships to
three Miami -Dade high school seniors. Two of them
have successfully completed the academy with one
already employed and one about to be hired by the
Miami Police Department. Our most recent recipient,
Junielis Ayala, a graduate of Law Enforcement
Memorial High, will soon be going through the
application process to begin her academy training. A
very special thanks to the Calzadilla family who
recently donated 5500 toward this year's scholarship.
We know that Angel Calzadilla, who passed away
from cystic fibrosis in 2011 at the age of 48, is happy
to know that his legacy lives on as we pursue
excellence in policing! Applications can be found on
E _ the program's website at
wvm.dotherightthinginc.ora/scholarship. The
deadline is April 15, 2014.
Recipient Junielis Ayala is awarded her
scholarship at theUAIC/DTRT Summer Salute
Awards Night in June.
