THE OWNERS OF GLOBOVISION T.V. IN VENEZUELA
Raul Gorrin, Gustavo Perdomo and Juan Domingo Cordero.
Whereas, the City of Miami has historically been the flagship City and leader of all
thirty-four municipalities in Miami -Dade County in supporting human rights,
freedom, and democracy throughout the Americas and beyond; and
Whereas, a major portion of the City of Miami's residents have either fled or are
native Miami -born sons and daughters of those that have fled tyrannies that have
oppressed human rights and civil liberties; and
Whereas, on February 12th, of this year 2014, the university students of
Venezuela, supported by a majority of the Venezuelan people, began daily
peaceful marches and demonstrations demanding human rights and democracy
for Venezuela, while having to face the government's violence and oppression
through its police forces and government -supported thugs called "colectivos"; and
Whereas, dozens of students have been killed, hundreds wounded, several
thousand arrested, along with dozens of reported cases of students being
tortured after their arrest by government forces; and
Whereas, the Venezuelan students and Venezuelan people have established an
"SOS Venezuela" rallying call to the international community in order to garner
support in their fight for human rights and freedom; and
Whereas, the Globovision Television station has turned a blind eye and has
refused to give coverage to the government's oppression of the Venezuelan
students and citizens that are being murdered and physically abused in the
streets of Venezuela; and
Whereas, after placing the majority shareholder of Globovision in a situation
where he was forced to sell, on April 2013, the Venezuelan government through
the National Commission of Telecommunications (CONATEL) approved the sale of
Globovision to Raul Gorrin, Gustavo Perdomo, and Juan Domingo Cordero; and
Whereas, immediately after buying Globovision the new owners began to
dismantle the station by erasing basic democratic principles such as freedom of
speech and firing many of its employees and causing many others to resign; and
Whereas, the doors to freedom of expression and television coverage of human
rights abuses by the government were closed in Globovision and the last
television station in Venezuela where Venezuelans could freely express
themselves was turned into a pro -government manipulated station; and
Whereas, the owners of Globovision, are part of the new rich "BOLIBURGUESES"
of the Venezuelan government, that have benefited from their connections to the
Venezuelan regime where they have made huge fortunes at the expense of the
Venezuelan people and are known in Venezuela as "ENCHUFADOS", those that
are connected and have benefited from the Venezuela regime; and
Whereas, the owners of Globovision are indirectly responsible, as the top officials
of the Venezuelan government are directly responsible, for the atrocities
committed against the Venezuelan students and Venezuelan people by the
"Nicolas Maduro/Diosdado Cabello tyranny" in Venezuela; and
Whereas, the owners of Globovision, Raul Gorrin, Gustavo Perdomo, and Juan
Domingo Cordero, have invested tens of millions of dollars in Miami -Dade County
in multimillion -dollar waterfront homes, multimillion -dollar condominium
apartments, numerous real estate investments, expensive automobiles and
motorcycles, yachts (one yacht being 100 feet long), and bank accounts; and
Whereas, the owners of Globovision and their associates have made these
investments through several dozen Florida corporations with addresses in Miami -
Dade County; and
Whereas, many of these corporations have addresses in the City of Miami and are
operating in violation of City laws without having certificates of occupancy and in
a residential single-family home location; and
Whereas, the owners of Globovision are hypocritically enjoying the benefits of
our democracy while helping the Venezuelan government deny those benefits of
human rights, freedom of speech, and democracy that we have in Miami, USA to
the Venezuelan people; and
Now therefore, be it resolved that the Miami City Commission is answering the
"SOS VENEZUELA" support requested from the students and people of Venezuela
and in doing so, and in support of, declares that the presence in Miami of Raul
Gorrin, Gustavo Perdomo, Juan Domingo Cordero, and other "ENCHUFADOS" of
the Venezuelan totalitarian regime is hypocritical, unwelcomed, and repugnant
to the residents of Miami, and hereby declare each of them to be "PERSONA NON
GRATA" in all of the City of Miami.
