HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-14-0182City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-14-0182 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 14-00385 Final Action Date: 5/8/2014 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION ENDORSING THE MISSION OF THE MIAMI PETS' TRUST AND URGING THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO IMPLEMENT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE AS APPROVED BY THE 2012 PETS' TRUST BALLOT INITIATIVE AND TO FUND THE IMPROVED ANIMAL SERVICES PROGRAMS IN THE 2014-2015 MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BUDGET; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. WHEREAS, in November 2012, almost 500,000 citizens of Miami -Dade County voted overwhelmingly in favor of a ballot question initiated by the Pets' Trust to stop the killing of animals in Miami -Dade County and help reduce the population of stray dogs and cats; and WHEREAS, the mission of the Pets' Trust is to improve animal welfare; increase adoptions; and decrease overpopulation through free and low-cost, income -based, spay/neuter operations, veterinary care, and educational programs; and WHEREAS, Miami -Dade County Animal Services cannot keep up with the deluge of animals that come to them, leading to thousands of animals that are killed each year; and and WHEREAS, the cost to taxpayers for the killing of animals is approximately $300.00 per animal; WHEREAS, the cost of a spay/neuter strategy is approximately $65.00 per animal; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami, recognizing that an overwhelming majority of citizens supported the mission of the Pets' Trust, urges the Miami -Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners to implement the will of the people by funding the Pets' Trust initiative for improved animal services; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby urges Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners to heed the will of the citizens of Miami -Dade County and fund the Pets' Trust initiative. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to send a copy of this resolution to Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1} Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
