The ultra weekend(s) has offered us a dramatic increase in sales. And have promoted our restaurant internationally. We had clients corne to us from places around the world who were here last year or who were refered by friends to us. Because of the increased traffic in our restaurant we had to employ 2 more part timers to be able to meet the demand in our restaurant. More over, the clients that the ultra Festival attracts are young people of great character. They are well intentioned and honest. They treated us, and our employees with respect and appreciation. They were friendly among each other and we never had not even one incident here at La Licuadora during their visits. It is my concern to think that this great business opportunity not only to us but to the rest of our fellow business owners in the area would be given up. Any other city in America would love to have the financial benefits that ultra brings to our city of Miami. I am in favor of ultra festival staying in Miami and in th.t regard, my wife our staff members here at La Licuadora and I, will make all possible effo'j s to let our voices be heard. Below we have stated why we feel Ultra is an asset to Downtown and the community in general. We think Ultra puts Downtown and Miami on the map in the eyes of the world for one weekend a year. It is a great example of what true diversity is. This event also has a great economic impact not only to Downtown Miami but to the whole City in the field of hospitality and food and beverage among others. It is a great compliment to Downtown Miami as far as culture. Ultra brings energy and a vibe that we feel are an asset to this area, we are all aware of the inconveniences that the festival generates but, the benefits to the city are grater than the inconveniences. What we should be doing is embracing it and look for ways how to improve the whole experience as well as ways for local business to benefit from it. The fact that this item is on the ballot and subject to a vote this Thursday, only weeks after the festival and while investigations are ongoing is troubling. A review of Mr. Sarnoff's quite public personal opinions about Ultra over the past few years is also quite telling. It appears Mr. Sarnoff is attempting to capitalize on the tragic event involving the CSC employee, to push his personal agenda to the forefront. What occurred to that girl is a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. All measures to fully investigate need to be undertaken and the course of all future actions guided accordingly. This tragedy should not however be a bully pulpit for Mr. Sarnoff's personal views about Ultra and the crowds it draws ( 65% of whom come from outside of Miami) All of you are professionals as well as politicians. I have no doubt that in your political, professional and personal lives you go to painstaking lengths to ensure that you have all the facts and information before you make important decisions, particularly a decision that could cost the City of Miami hundreds of millions of dollars, additional work for hundreds of police officers, firefighters and citizens, and immeasurable positive public relations for the City as for three days, the true beauty of Miami is showcased live worldwide. Although I know the organizers of Ultra well, I am not a fan of EDM. I suppose like many 50 year olds I think it is way too loud and all sounds the same ( much like each and every generation before us has said about the current music fads). I would not however let my personal views cloud my judgment on what is best for people like myself who work and reside in this great city. Look at the crime stats ( particularly drugs and prostitution) during Super Bowl Week. These stats don't deter this City and many others, from spending hundreds of thousands of dollars ( potentially hundreds of millions of tax dollars if you include stadium renovations) in an effort to lure the NFL and its corporate sponsors to their city for a week. It is sad that with any large event, Super Bowl, Boat Shows, Art Basel, there is always a corresponding increase in crime, both violent and non-violent. Let's not lose sight that what happened to the poor security guard was a violent crime committed by hoodlums who unlawfully knocked over a fence and trampled over a human being) Continuing and ongoing measures must always be undertaken to prevent and deter same. In regards to Ultra, let the investigation be completed, discuss the measures to ensure the safest venue possible, but please don't punish the City for one man's personal views. Thank you for your full and fair consideration of this very important matter. David (Davit cR, Jfi fenean, Esq. There will always be a few "bad apples" at such an event. The goal is to learn from mistakes and take strong preventive measures so that don't repeatedly happen. Strict preventive measures can and "should" be implemented to create a safe environment for all that attend. {workers & guests) I am in the opinion of certain city politicians are trying to distort the real facts of the general good will that Ultra brings to the city, by showing some video that does not establish a correct and accurate analysis of the show. Ultra Music Festival has become a signature event for the city of Miami and it is a huge boost to the economy of south Florida. 1 live in the City of Miami and work in the City of Miami. I am aware that there will always be a vocal minority who don't like the crowds or the noise that accompanies the vibrancy of any thriving urban core. Ultra has become a world -class event. It is one of the events that make living in this city so magical. It is clear to me that Commissioner Sarnoff's opposition to Ultra Music Festival has nothing to do with the facts. He rushed to judgment immediately following the tragic incident with the security guard. He is now circulating a brief video compilation of very isolated instances of bad behavior which may have taken place during past Ultras. In contrast, Ultra has produced hours and hours of exceptional video — including a full-length feature film which is streamed all over the world, and showcases our city in a way like no other event. To literally millions of viewers around the world, they present our city of Miami like the beautiful place that it is. There is no place I would rather live, and watching any of the Ultra video broadcasts never fails to remind me of that. This issue is very important to me. I am a 51 year old father of four (who have all attended Ultra), serious music fan, attorney and owner of commercial property in Miami Dade County. As a father, I have chaperoned my kids to the music festival. There is definitely a bohemian element there, but that issue is brought on by the fans, not promoted by the festival. As long as the attendee is prudent and law abiding, there is no one pushing a bohemian element on the innocent. Just as a youth must make prudent decisions at school, the same criteria is applicable at Ultra. With my kids and their friends, the atmosphere was positive and moralistic. Between the police presence and an obvious anti -drug policy imposed by Ultra, the festival is not a negative, degenerate atmosphere. As a music fan, I have attended many music festivals and concerts https://mail.google.com/mail/u/2/?ui=2&ik=4059f7d6ab&view=pt&search=inbox&msg=145470d6d58d1b20&sim1=145470d6d58d1b20 Page 1 of 3 Ultra Music Festival Mail - Fwd: Proposal to do away with Ultra 4/9/14, 11:17 AM Just as has been applicable to so many shows, it is not possible to foresee every issue. With a history of Ultras with no major issues, and successful utilization of crowd control protocols, it must be difficult to always foresee problems. Bill Graham, the pioneering promoter for festivals (he managed the Fillmore West and East, Live Aid and many festivals) , in his biography "Bill Graham Presents; My Life Inside Rock and Roll" constantly discusses the learning curve in promoting live shows., The collapse of the fence was tragic but, with Ultra losing money because of the trespassers, they had a significant interest in keeping them out. That situation was caused by individuals challenging and defying Ultra's wishes. Any event, whether it's a festival, sporting event, parade or any other collection of multitudes will have inherent problems. With the successful ushering of over a hundred thousand people, a minute fraction cannot represent what the festival truly is. As a property owner and professional working in the county, it cannot be ignored how big and integral of an event Ultra is . It is intertwined with numerous tangential events and businesses . As a business owner and professional, I not only recognize the current financial impact, but I also sense it growing. The knee jerk reaction by some of the commissioners reminds me of the reverend outlawing dancing in the movie "Dirty Dancing". The knee jerk reaction is too extreme and gives the appearance of an embarrassing antiquity. Ultra didn't cause or promote problems, people breaking the law committed the problems. It's the wrong doers that deserve the scathe, not the promoters. Now that a security problem has been exposed ,it seems very fix- able. I'm sure that there are very qualified crowd control and security professionals to remedy the flaw from this year. Just because there's a blow out on a car doesn't mean you throw the whole car out. The problems from this year's Ultra can be fixed leaving more positives than negatives remaining for this well - regarded event. In my experience the vast majority of patrons of the festival have been very friendly, relaxed and complimentary of their experience and visit to Miami with the intent to return in the future. During the weekend of the event, traffic is certainly impacted but I believe that comes with living in a city that has an array of activities on any given night that range from Heat games to off Broadway shows and concerts, etc. I gladly accept the trade off to have the opportunity to live in such a diverse and cultured city. Lastly, I've seen firsthand when visiting restaurants and businesses located in the downtown area what a significant direct economic driver this festival is for those owners.
