Regalado said Erica Mack, 28, the injured Contemporary Services Corporation security guard, still had a "long road ahead of her." She suffered severe brain hemorrhaging when she was trampled by a mob of people who did not have tickets to the festival and stormed a weak spot in the fencing. "She is disoriented and confused and nobody knows how this will affect her future," he said. Jackson Memorial Hospital did not release any information about the patient; Regalado said he got an update from Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa, Ultra Music Festival law enforcement reports. Ultra Music Festival Ultra Music Festival Dear Mayor Regalado : I read with keen interest your comments on March 30, 2014 in The Miami Herald regarding the future scheduling of the Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park in Miami. Like you, I am deeply concerned by the reports of arrests and health emergencies related to Ultra —unfortunately these happen every year and shed a disturbing light on dangerous and illegal behavior by some festival attendees. Most recently, the tragic accident that seriously injured a festival security guard is a clear sign that we have to reevaluate Ultra's presence in our community, The University of Miami is home to thousands of young men and women, many of whom are away from their families for the first time. As educators and caretakers, our students' safety and wellbeing is paramount. Our staff is challenged each year by serious incidents involving UM students as a direct result of attendance at Ultra. In fact, we were so concerned this year we communicated a safety advisory to all of our students (attached), We support your effort to lead a review of this Festival and any others in the future. Ultra Music Festival Dear Student: Everyone in the UM community has a shared interest in our students' health, safety, and academic success. With this comes a shared commitment to proactively addressing high -risk drinking and substance use. This weekend is the Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami. While it has grown to become one of Miami's signature music events, Ultra has also negatively affected some of our students. If you are planning to attend, we encourage you to spend time thinking of a plan to help ensure your safety, and the safety of your friends, before you even leave campus. With this in mind, here are a few safety tips: • Each year, students unknowingly have alcohol or drugs slipped into their drinks or food. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you; • Remain with friends at all times; • designate a meeting place and time in case someone gets lost; and • If there is an emergency or problem, call 911 immediately.
