SUBJECT: Police Department Hiring and
Staffing Update
As per the request of the City Commission during the October 10, 2013, City Commission meeting, I
present this memorandum, which outlines the Police Department's manpower allocation and hiring
progress.
The Miami Police Department is currently operating with 65 sworn vacancies, although 35 of those
vacancies are due to the positions added to the current fiscal year's budget. There arc 11 sworn members of
the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2014.
The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress:

• Exhausted Certified Police Officer list: hired 28 of 450 applicants.
• . Processing the first batch of 362 applicants from 1,322 on the lst.
• Seven (7) Police Officers to be hired March 25, 2014.
• Five (5) Police Officers awaiting medical clearance.
• Remaining 75 Applicants are in the polygraph examination and background
investigation phases.
• Second hatch of 366 applicants to be processed in mid -April 2014.
Detention
• Processing four (4) remaining applicants:
• Expected to fill 2 vacant positions prior to April 2014, pending interview
results
Of the 20 sworn officers the administration promised to redeploy to field operations, 9 have been
redeployed. Interviews for the remaining positions are ongoing.
The table on the following page is a snapshot of the Police Department's hiring progress and staffing levels
from May 9, 2013 through the February 27, 2014 City Commission meeting.
