SUBJECT: Police Department Hiring and
Staffing Update
As per the request of the City Commission during the October 10, 2013, City Commission meeting, I
present this memorandum, which outlines the Police Department's manpower allocation and hiring
progress.
The Miami Police Department is currently operating with 65 sworn vacancies, although 35 of those
vacancies are due to the positions added to the current fiscal year's budget. There are 12 sworn members of
the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2014.
The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress:

Processing the first batch of 362 applicants from 1,322 on the list.

One (1) Police Officer to be hired March 18, 2014
•
Seven(7) Police Officers awaiting medical clearance.
•
Remaining 86 Applicants are in the polygraph examination phase.
•
Second batch of 366 applicants to be processed in mid -April 2014.
Detention Officer
•
Processing final five (5) remaining applicants:
• Expected to fill 2 vacant positions prior to April 2014, if enough
applicants pass all pre -employment hurdles.
• Currently in the background investigation phase
Of the 20 sworn officers the administration promised to redeploy to field operations, 9 have been
redeployed. Three current civilian employees were promoted during the first week of February and will
replace an additional 3 officers which will be sent to Patrol in March 2014. Eligible registers have been
established for the remaining 8 civilian positions which will be replacing the sworn officers, and interviews,
for which we are awaiting results, have been conducted. These new civilian positions have been accounted
for and approved in the FY .13/1.4 Budget.

from May 9, 2013 through the February 27, 2014 City Commission meeting.
