Facts about KIDCO
History
Community Development Block Grant funds became
available to needy communities in 1974. These funds have
been part of our 37 year history and KIDCO feels strongly that
benefits have reached the Wynwood community residents.
As that time grassroots efforts were organized to request
these vital funds and they have been part of our communities
in serving our children and families with their child care,
crime prevention, elderly care, employment, training, and
such needs. At that time the Holy Cross Episcopal Church
provided use of their property for the child care program,
and second, they provided the matching funds for the
renovation of their facilities.
KIDCO II (Holy Cross Site) located at 123 NE 36th Street,
opened its doors to the children and families of the
community in May 23, 1976 with a license capacity of 60
children. The KIDCO II site was moved to another location
after thirty-seven (37) years of service at that site. The
community is changing ever so rapidly but the needs of those
at risk continue to be the same.
As a community -based organization, KIDCO has continued to
expand and try to keep up with the ever growing demands for
early care and education needs of the community. Today,
KIDCO is a renowned agency in the community with seven (7)
locations, central office, and serving 450 children of which
360 are Head Start and 16 Early Head Start. KIDCO Child
Care, Inc. achieved becoming a Head Start Delegate Agency
in 1987 and originally served 80 Head Start children.
Background
KIDCO Child Care, Inc. is a private non-profit community
based organization with an active Board of Directors and a
Board of Trustees who are concerned for the safety and well-
being of young children and their families. Its main goal is to
provide quality early care and education services to children
between two months and five years of age. These services
aid parents who need to work and/or study by providing
them with assistance, referral services, and most importantly,
with early childhood development services for their children
as they get ready for the years of schooling.
License Capacity
KIDCO is licensed to serve 450 children within the Wynwood
and neighboring communities. We serve approximately 90%
low and moderate -income families. 70% of these children are
in families run primarily by single women and an
encouraging trend is that these young women and now
earning their high school diploma or equivalent. Still these
families need support and opportunities. KIDCO hires from
within these communities and have a total of 84 employees
who proudly serve the children and families.
Involvement
Part of our philosophy is to keep up with today's trends in early
childhood educational practices. Therefore, KIDCO offers
comprehensive services to children and their families. First by
having an experienced and knowledgeable administration
who works to accomplish maximum utilization of the allocated
funding tin order to provide quality care and education

Messages
President/CEO
It is almost dreamlike to
think that our organization,
KIDCO Child Care Inc. just
celebrated its 37th
anniversary. As the founder
and Executive Director, I
find great pride in knowing
we have served the
Wynwood, Little Haiti and
adjacent communities for
these many years. We have
made it our mission to bring quality early care and
education services to these children and families who
need it the most.
As a not -for -profit we always face challenges and still
we fight and find ways to continue our mission. This
past year we were able to open two new sites in order
to continue sewing the same number of children under
our Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
Our main offices and largest site has been on NE 36`h
Street for the past thirty seven years however with the
many changes taking place in our community we have
faced incredible encounters including having to move
from our first site which opened in 1976. These have
been emotional and economically difficult times but we
managed to relocate our children and the two new sites
are still a work in progress.
Head Start and Early Head Start continue to be our
primary funding source. This is our nation's premier
early childhood program and we serve 90% of our
enrollment with these funds. It is a program for
families and their young children based on
comprehensive services.
Our legacy is based on thirty-seven years of hard work
and as a multi -funded agency we will continue to work
with children and families who need it the most.
Warm regards,

It is hard to believe that
thirty seven years have
passed so quickly. It
seems like a lifetime and
yet there is still so much
potential for further growth. The last few years with our
ailing economy have been difficult to say the least. Yet,
we have a terrific Team K, a wonderful personnel and
caring and devoted Board Members and Trustees who
help us to reach our goals.
At KIDCO we consider ourselves part of a big family
facing a daily challenge to make a difference in the lives
of the children we serve. My main responsibilities are
to oversee our agency's daily operations, share my
responsibilities with the management staff and oversee
the Human Resources part of the agency.
Our Annual Report highlights our accomplishments and
offers information to involve all of you in our
work. Thank you so much for being part of our KIDCO

For the past two terms I have served as Chairperson to
this organization and I have been able to share with my

KIDCO has continued to grow and this is marked by the
opening of two KIDCO sites one in Little Haiti and one in
Hialeah. Our Executive and administrative staff have
made this happen and for that we congratulate Nilsa and

Board Involvement
Each board member is actively involved in their areas of
expertise.
Karen Lederman, our Chairperson, truly worked
especially hard this past year as KIDCO faced many
challenges including searching for new facilities. She
attended administrative meetings related to the search
for the needed facilities this past year. Most importantly
she was part of our team when meeting the KIDCO
attorney and providing input in the search for facilities,
KIDCO's banking needs and contractual
obligations. Karen is always there exceeding her role as
Board Chair.
Hugo Barrientos, our Policy Council Representative is also
very involved in our communities primarily since he
owns a business in Wynwood and has great interest in
giving back and in helping children and families.
Esther Brown has faced a difficult year health wise but
continues to represent KIDCO at various levels with the
grantee is a true former Head Start parent who looks out
for the benefit of children and families.
Janette Solis, as our fiscal professional, reviews all fiscal
documents prior to our board meetings and makes her
presentations to the board members.

she completed her Doctorate Degree and her title is
Doctor of Education in Human Resource Development
and Administration. We are proud of her achievement
and her contributions to our safety and health policies
and procedures.
Jean Robert Menard is involved in our policies regarding
children's well-being and total development. His
expertise is valuable as we consult with him with not only
programmatic situations but also financial matters.
June True, Trustee, stands out as each year she makes a
personal donation to KIDCO plus makes visits to our
central office and reads our monthly newsletter in order
to keep informed of our day to day activities. Thank you
June for your everlasting dedication to KIDCO!!!!
Luis Hernandez, Trustee, who is a true advocate for the
education and welfare of Hispanic children and families,
recently brought us the opportunity to be part of a
beautiful and challenging opportunity to participate

children build their English language development, math
and literacy skills through the use of a tablet and special
curriculum content drawn from research on best
practices in early learning.

In Memoriam
Josefa Vega
KIDCO has been fortunate that our
staff has been fairly healthy and
most stay on for long periods of
time. However, this year we lost
one of our most dedicated and
respected staff members. Josefa
Vega was part of our KIDCO
family for over twenty years and
began to feel ill around March of
this year and resigned in April as
she wanted to take care of her
health. She sadly passed away in
November. We miss you Josefa.
Rest in Peace!

Former Employees/Students Visit KIDCO
One of our favorite things at KIDCO is when former
students or employees return to visit. This year it was
very special as we had the daughter (former student
herself) of Margarita Archila, a former employee
from the original group from the late 70's. This was a
special visit and one of several as KIDCO was also
honored to have Mayra Figueroa visit with her
grandchildren and Magdalena Plasencio with her
daughters (below). It is so rewarding to see the
success achieved by those who were part of KIDCO's
history.
Special Projects/Grants
HITN Pocoyo
Pilot Program that is designed to help young
children build their English language development,
math and literacy skills through the use of a tablet
and special curriculum content drawn from research
on best practices in early learning.
This Pilot Program is part of the Hispanic
Information Technology Network's (HITN) 24-hour
Spanish language channel and Zinkia Entertainment
are collaborating on the launch of the Early Learning
Collaborative (ELC) a collaborative effort
introducing a series of tablet -based apps called
Pocoyo® PlaysetsTM. These playsets are correlated
to the state early learning standards, Head Start
standards and aligned with the Common Core State
Standards for kindergarten. The current PlaySet
apps support English language development in a
variety of formal and informal settings, as well as
programs that use specific approaches to teaching
or reinforcing Spanish and English. The PlaySet
provides experiences for Spanish speaking early
language learners and are grounded in research -
based strategies that promote the acquisition of
English during the preschool years.
HITN was the recipient of a five-year Ready to Learn
grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
This grant was awarded to launch the research and
development of the digital apps, resource materials
for teachers, and resource materials for parents.
The PlaySets provide young learners, three, four and
five-year olds, with fun and interactive educational
experiences that help them develop language,
literacy and math skills. Building on linguistic,
cultural, and cognitive knowledge of young learners
is essential in promoting English language
acquisition and academic achievement over time,
preparing them for future endeavors in a global
workforce while valuing and embracing their family
heritage and cultural perspectives.

October 31, 2012
The KIDCO VI Opening was memorable because it

awarded by City of Miami Commissioner Sarnoff this
facility was purchased and renovated. The event
was covered by the City of Miami media department
and KIDCO was privileged to have Commissioner
Sarnoff but also Mayor Regalado. It was a special
day for our community, our children and our
families!

Christmas 2012
With Mayor Regalado
December 21, 2012
Each year KIDCO has friends to help reach a toy
per child. This past year we received a donation
from Resorts World Miami to buy Christmas gifts
for our KIDCO children. Mayor Regalado,
Susana Baker, recording artist Ruben Campbell
and other friends made the holiday season
memorable for our children. KIDCO had a visit
from Santa and gifts for each child.
Trip to Tallahassee
April3, 2013
Our Executive Director Nilsa Velazquez, Head Start
and Director Ivette Riano and Rosa Casamor Social
Services Director traveled to Tallahassee to visit with
our senators and Representatives from Miami -Dade
County. At the time of their visit there were some
exciting possibilities with county owned land;
properties and funding for KIDCO to
expand. Senators Dwight Bullard Daphne Campbell
were extremely helpful but these matters were not
feasible at this time. It was very instructive and good
relations were started.

National Head Start Association
(NHSA) Conference - Washington, DC
May 1, 2013
This past year the Head Start Grantee helped with the
funding to send one staff member to the Head Start annual
conference. Ivette Riano and Rosa Casamor attended the
conference and continued to expand their knowledge and
level of expertise with the Head Start and Early Head Start
program.

Purchase and Closing of New
Properties
Changes in the immediate community with the growth and
development of new high -end businesses and buildings
two of our facilities had to be relocated in actually less
than one year. These two new sites KIDCO I1 and VII were
purchased, renovated and licensed just in time for the
opening of the new school year. This was due to the
phenomenal hard work of primarily Ivette Riano and Rosa
Casamor and the rest of the staff who worked just as hard
including weekends.

Parent Activity at Vizcaya
May 23, 2013
Each year parents from each center participate in choosing
an activity using their Parent activity Fund. These
suggestions for training and learning opportunities are
taken to the Policy Committee where a decision is made by
majority of parents. This year the activity was held at
Vizcaya a beautiful South Florida Historical Landmark worth
visiting. The parents had a terrific and informative tour of
the gardens and celebrated the history of this rich lace and
then enjoyed a wonderful lunch at KIDCO III.
Holy Cross Site Farewell
June 14, 2013
KIDCO enjoyed a thirty-seven (37) year partnership
with the Holy Cross Episcopal Church located in
Wynwood. This was a partnership where KIDCO
leased from the Episcopal Diocese for long-term
contracts and when the contract was to be
renegotiated it was returned with only a one year
term. Shortly after we were informed that the
Church sold their property and we had less than a
year to find a new location and relocate our children
from the KIDCO II site. This was a sad farewell as we
had been part of what we thought was a historical
building. Demolition of the Church and its
surrounding building has now been completed.
