A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 34TH STREET FROM NORTHWEST 2ND AVENUE TO NORTH
MIAMI AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "DR. ALICIAS. BARE WAY," FURTHER
DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO INSTRUCT THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC
WORKS TO TRANSMITA COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICES.
WHEREAS, Dr. Alicia Santos Baro was born August 1, 1918, in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico and
was raised in Bronx, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Baro earned a bachelor's degree in education from Hunter College in 1940, an
honorary doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico, and a Miami Herald Spirit of Excellence award
after she moved to Miami with her husband and two young daughters in the 1950's; and
WHEREAS, she was a founding member of the Puerto Rican Democrats organization and the
Miami Chapter of the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, which funds scholarships for
young women and ASPIRA of Florida, Inc., a nonprofit agency that promotes educational and
leadership opportunities for Hispanic youth; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Baro was a recipient of numerous awards and honors including Distinguished
Service Awards from the 18th District of the Florida Congressional Delegation and the City of Miami;
and
WHEREAS, she was also featured in Julia's Daughters, a book highlighting historical women of
Miami -Dade County; and
WHEREAS, in 1995 the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women (NACOPRW) instituted
the Annual Alicia Baro Achievement Award; and
WHEREAS, her life was dedicated to ensure the rights of Hispanic Women, and other
minorities in political representation, education, and employment, until her passing on January 2, 2012;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted
by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. Northwest 34th Street from Northwest 2nd Avenue to North Miami Avenue, Miami,
Florida, is codesignated as "Dr. Alicia S. Baro Way."
Section 3. The City Manager is directed to instruct the Director of Public Works to transmit a
copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, Miami -Dade County

Public Works, and the United States Postal Service.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature
of the Mayor.{1}

{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar
days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
