HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-13-0362City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-13-0362 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 13-01094 Final Action Date: 9/12/2013 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE MEMBERS OF THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY COMMISSION TO VOTE TO FULLY FUND THE 2013-2014 HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START PROGRAM IN MIAMI-ADE COUNTY AT PRE -SEQUESTRATION LEVELS, BY INVESTING $2.9 MILLION TO MAKE THE PROGRAM WHOLE; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children ages birth to 5 from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development; and WHEREAS, Head Start programs provide comprehensive services to enrolled children and their families, which includes health, nutrition and social services determined to be necessary by family needs assessments, in addition to education and cognitive development services; and WHEREAS, Miami -Dade County and its partnering delegate agencies provided early childhood education services to more than 6,700 children during budget year 2011- 2012; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges the members of the Miami -Dade County Commission to vote to fully fund the 2013-2014 Head Start/Early Head Start Program in Miami Dade County at pre -sequestration levels, by investing $2.9 million to make the program whole. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Members of the Miami -Dade County Commission. Section 4.
