A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY TO CODESIGNATE NORTHWEST 2ND AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST
8TH STREET TO NORTHWEST 14TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "DR.
DOROTHY JENKINS FIELDS AVENUE;" FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK
TO TRANSMITA COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICES.
WHEREAS, Northwest 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida, is a Miami -Dade County road and the City of
Miami does not have jurisdiction over this roadway; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission is urging Miami -Dade County to co -designate Northwest
2nd Avenue from Northwest 8th Street to Northwest 14th Street, Miami, Florida, as, "Dr. Dorothy
Jenkins Fields Avenue"; and
WHEREAS, the maternal grandparents of Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields immigrated from Harbour
Island Bahamas Key West to Miami's Colored Town, Overtown in 1903; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, historian, created and established The Black Archives
History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, in Tallahassee, on March 23, 2011, Dr. Fields received the Mary Darby Collins Award,
which is the State of Florida's highest historic preservation award; and
WHEREAS, under Dr. Fields' leadership The Black Archives Foundation acquired, restored and
operates the Lyric Theater; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission would like to honor Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields with this
co -designation for her good works, leadership, vision and inspiration;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges Miami -Dade County to co -designate Northwest 2nd
Avenue from Northwest 8th Street to Northwest 14th Street, Miami, Florida, as "Dr. Dorothy Jenkins
Fields Avenue."
Section 3. The City Manager is directed to instruct the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this
Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, Miami -Dade County Public Works,
and the United States Postal Service.

Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1}

Footnotes:
{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
