A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S),
RENAMING "SPOIL ISLAND E", LOCATED IN BISCAYNE BAY APPROXIMATELY
ONE QUARTER MILE SOUTH OF THE SOUTHERN TERMINUS OF SOUTHWEST
27TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS DEPICTED IN "EXHIBIT B", ATTACHED AND
INCORPORATED, TO "CLARINGTON ISLAND"; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER
TO TAKE ALL ACTION NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE RENAMING OF SAID
ISLAND.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami owns the property located in Biscayne Bay approximately one
quarter mile south of the southern terminus of Southwest 27th Avenue, Miami, Florida, commonly
known as "Spoil Island E" as evidenced by "Exhibit A", attached and incorporated; and
WHEREAS, Robert Clarington was a lifelong active resident of Coconut Grove, and worked at the
Coconut Grove Sailing Club ("Sailing Club") since 1958 for more than 50 years, and during those
years he facilitated a connection of "Spoil Island E" to Coconut Grove's mainland; and
WHEREAS, Robert Clarington worked his way from janitor to dockmaster of the Sailing Club and
assisted in building the Sailing Club's boat moorings, which established Coconut Grove's identity as a
seaside sailing village; and
WHEREAS, Robert Clarington died on November 18, 2008, and the City Commission wishes to
honor his lifelong contributions to the Coconut Grove waterfront and to "Spoil Island E's" vitality; and
WHEREAS, at the May 8, 2013, meeting of the Coconut Grove Waterfront Master Plan
Implementation Committee, the committee recommended that the City Commission rename "Spoil
Island E" seen in "Exhibit B", attached and incorporated, be renamed to "Clarington Island";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are incorporated
as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission renames "Spoil Island E", located in Biscayne Bay approximately
one quarter mile south of the southern terminus of Southwest 27th Avenue, Miami, Florida, as depicted
in "Exhibit B", attached and incorporated, to "Clarington Island."
Section 3. The City Manager is directed to take all administrative action necessary to effectuate
the renaming of said island.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption and signature of the
Mayor. {1}

{1 } If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it, shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
