PA) OTHER EN `'ITIES AND INDIVIDUALS TO PRESERVE, RESTORE AND RETURN THE MIAMI MARINE STADIUM STRUCTURE AND SIT' TO VIBRANT PUBLIC USE, INCLUDING THE UTILIZATION OF APPROPRIATE PU':?i_IC FUNDS AND PRIVATE CONTRIBUTIONS TO PURSUE THESE EFFORTS WHEREAS, the Greater Miami Chamber is South Florida's largest business organization, reaching more than 400,000 employees through its member companies in what is the eighth largest marketplace in America. The Chamber's agenda is to support economic and business issues ranging from regional business development, international business development, leadership programs and govemmental affairs; and WHEREAS, the Miami Marine Stadium, built in 1963, with its dramatically suspended, folded -concrete roof, has received national and international acclaim and is now widely regarded as a design and engineering marvel with no equivalent in the world; and WHEREAS, the Miami Marine Stadium has been designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of 34 "National Treasures" in need of saving, along with the quake -damaged National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and the hospital complex on Ellis Island; and WHEREAS, the Miami Marine Stadium has been closed since 1992 and currently is in disrepair; and WHEREAS, the efforts of Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, Inc., a Florida 501c3 organization, and other entities and individuals to preserve, restore and rehabilitate to vibrant public use the Miami Marine Stadium site is in furtherance of the best interests of the Greater Miami community; and WHEREAS, the Miami Marine Stadium also stands as a signal contribution of Cuban exiles to their adoptive community as the structure was designed by a young, newly -arrived Cuban exile, Hilario Candela, who went on to become one of Miami's leading architects and who collaborated with engineer Jack Meyer on the design of the stadium; and WHEREAS, the Miami Marine Stadium should be restored to a central place in the Greater Miami community's cultural landscape; and WHEREAS, the Miami Marine Stadium is inextricably tied to the history, culture and diversity of the Greater Miami community and its preservation, restoration and return to vibrant public use is in furtherance of the Chambers goals and objectives set forth for the 2013-2014 year; and WHEREAS, the Greater Miami Chamber Commerce believes the Miami Marine Stadium structure and site should be restored and returned to vibrant public use in a timely manner and encourages the community and government to support these efforts. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce supports efforts by the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, Inc. and other entities and individuals to preserve, restore and return the Miami Marine Stadium structure and site to vibrant public use, including the utilization of appropriate public funds and private contributions to pursue these efforts. It is our understanding that the escrow arrangement is an important component of the planning for the rehabilitation of the Stadium pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding dated May 15, 2012, by and among the City of Miami, the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority and the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium. Please communicate to the City of Miami and the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority that the National Trust is committed to working with you to develop an appropriate escrow arrangement. As you know, the National Trust is a privately -funded national non-profit preservation membership organization that was chartered by the United States Congress in 1949. The National Trust works to save historic places, including National Treasures, National Trust Historic Sites and America's it -Most Endangered Historic Places. The Miami Marine Stadium was designated by the National Trust as a National Treasure in 2012, and we are thoroughly familiar with the project, having been working with Friends of Miami Marine Stadium since 2008. The successful rehabilitation and operation of the Marine Stadium is a key priority for the Trust. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is pleased to provide to you with this commitment to develop an escrow arrangement for the for the Miami Marine Stadium project. July 11 th confirming and approving the site plan needed to generate sufficient revenue for the viable operation and maintenance of the Miami Marine Stadium in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding dated May 15, 2012 by and between the City of Miami. The Miami Sports and Exhibit Authority and the Friends of the Marine Stadium. The approval of this resolution will empower the Friends of the Marine Stadium to raise the money necessary by private means for the upgrading and updating of that landmark site which we all value so much. The Marine Stadium site has invaluable historic and cultural significance for our community including the recent designation as a National 'ireasure by the National Trust for historic Preservation. the first for a Cuban -born architect in America. It hosted many world class events from powerboat races to boxing matches to legendary concerts by the likes of Jimmy Buffet. Bonnie Raitt, Queen. and Ray Charles. The Marine Stadium was also used for annual multi -denominational Easter sunrise services and flotillas for "La Virgcn de la Caridad del Cobre" (The Virgin of Charity), the patroness of Cuba and protector of mariners.
