Director City Manager Page 1 of 1 AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY FORM CONTINUED Background Information: The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS ("HOPWA") Program was created under the AIDS Housing Opportunity Act and revised under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1992. Since 1994 the City of Miami ("City") has received HOPWA Program funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (" HUD") and has been responsible for the implementation of programs designed to provide housing and related services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the City and throughout Miami -Dade County. The AIDS Community has expressed the need for a STRMU program due to the current economic conditions resulting in high unemployment in the community. Pursuant to Resolution No. 12-0004, adopted January 12, 2012, the Miami City Commission approved the allocation of $65,000 for the STRMU program to Sunshine for All, Inc. All funds have been utilized but there still remain unmet needs in the HOPWA program for such a program;. The Administration recommends the allocation for Program Year 2013-2014 HOPWA STRMU assistance funds, in the amount of $600,000 as specified in Attachment "A", attached and incorporated, to provide Short Term Rental, Mortgage and Utility assistance to low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
