BIOGRAPHY FOR GRACE MARILYN CASAS
I was born in Miami on February 2, 1978 a day usually called Ground Hog's Day. My
father worked as a machinist in Belle Glade well into my earlier twenties while my mother was a
part-time housekeeper and part-time homemaker. After graduating from Miami Senior High
School in June of 1996, I was admitted as a full time student to the University of Miami. From
August of 1996 until December 1999, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and
International Studies. I had already applied to several law schools when I received the news that
I was admitted into the 2001 spring class at the University of Florida, Levin College of Law.
In addition to earning my law degree while at the University of Florida, I also earned a
certificate of specialization in the areas of family and children's law. I enjoyed volunteering for.
Animal People, Inc., a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Gainesville during my time as a
University of Florida law student. I had the privilege of working as a certified legal intern in the
Virgil Hawkins Legal Clinic where under the supervision of Jeff Grater, Esquire who always told
all the students he would let us tread water but never drown, I had my first experience of
representing clients in actual family law cases.
After graduation in December 2003, I passed the Florida. Bar Exam and was sworn in by
the Honorable Judge Frederic Smith of the Eighth Judicial Circuit in April of 2004. I worked for
a small law finn in Starke, Florida before I went to work as a Child Welfare Legal Service
attorney for the Department of Children and Families where I remained for about two (2) years. I
then transitioned into the role of case coordinator for the University of Florida Child Protection
Team. My time there was cut short when my father began having a serious of health problems
which eventually brought me home to Miami.
For almost two (2) years I worked for a small law firm learning more about family and
criminal law. But I also ended learning more about what was important to me and pushing
sometimes being pushed into really testing my limits. In 2010, I started my own solo practice
which is where I am today. This is the next chapter of my life which I am still writing and being
inspired to do more and be more daring than I would have ever thought I could when I was in
law school.
My inspiration still comes from my parents who still know what to say when I need the
occasional pick me up. But it also comes from old and new friend and reading books such as the
Art of War and Elizabeth 1, a portrait of a queen.

Mairlyn Lightbourn
Q. What aspect of your life and/or work experience has prepared you for
Membership on the CIP Nominating Committee?
A. I worked with law enforcement for eighteen years. I started out as a
classification officer, at the South Florida Reception Center in, Miami
Florida. After having those responsibilities for some time, I then became a
parole probation officer. With this position came many challenges, lots of
awards and gratifications.
1 worked closely with the State Attorney's Office, Judges, and Attorneys. I
conducted investigations, issued warrants, and executed pre -sentencing
investigation (PSI). I also perform probation violation hearings. I made
factual determinations, facilitate resolutions and propose
recommendations to the courts. Most of all, I provided care, custody and
control of the community.
I am now an educator, teaching children with learning disabilities, at the
Elementary level. 1 am also enrolled at St. Thomas University obtaining a
second Masters degree in Education.
Q. Why do you which to serve on the CIP Nominating Committee?
A. With my background and experiences, 1 feel, I can honestly and truthfully
investigate any investigation and render the findings based on the
preponderance of the evidence. 1 really want to give back to my community.
