Dept donations (2).docx
Good morning Ken.
Please see the enclosed documents regarding a donation request made by Bartow Fire Academy. We have identified the
enclosed items that have no value to the Miami Fire Department but can be used by them to train High School kids in fire
fighting. This bunker gear cannot and will not be used for actual fire fighting activities as it is over ten years old and is no
longer NFPA compliant. The helmets are structurally unsafe as they have cracks and the integrity has been compromised
fro front line usage but can be used in a training environment. Boots that are very worn out and useless to. us. The
hydraulic equipment is old and has not been used for over 6 years. The power plant and hydraulic tools have leaks and do
not run properly. These tools are no longer of any value to the Miami Fire Department, and it's value in the open market
is negligible.
Please advise if this e-mail suffices to get this item on the commission agenda or if you need something else from us.
Thanks for your attention.

Hello Maria.
We need to put together an item for commission. It is to donate some old equipment to a High School in Bartow,
Florida. Enclosed are the back-up documents needed. One PDF (Fire Donation Letter) is the request I wrote to Chief
Kemp and can be used as the main body of the item. The other two documents are the official requests from their
organization requesting the donation with a background of who they are.
Please let me know if you need anything else from me and when we can expect this to be ready for commission.
Thanks

Chief,
We've recently had a request from Bartow High School Medical and Fire Academies for a donation of
any equipment or supplies that are no longer of use or of value to the Miami Fire Department. The
Workforce Education Department is a part of the School Board of Polk County. The school operates this
Academy in an effort to provide additional learning opportunities to the youth of their communities and
are a not for profit organization. They have very limited funding and are requesting any equipment that
is no longer usable to be donated to them. The donation of this equipment will not cost us any money
as they will pick up and incur the cost for transporting everything back to their facility. Below are items
that we have identified as equipment that is no longer of any use to us and the possible value it might
have at auction or as trade in value:
Amkus Extrication tools have been at the Fire Training center for over 6 years without being used. The
power units have leaks, do not run well and some of the tools themselves have hydraulic Teaks. They are
antiquated and are of no value to the Miami Fire Department for several reasons. We do not use Amkus
tools and we have recently purchased a complete compliment of Rescue Tools to outfit the apparatus at
Stations 1, 6, 8, 9 and 10 as well as providing a set for the Training center to use for recruit training.
Their value at auction is questionable.
Fire Fighting Boots, are old and worn as they have been turned in by fire fighters. These boots are the
ones that fire fighters turn in as being worn and we've replaced them with new ones. We have several
boxes that have been stored for years and have absolutely no value to the Miami Fire Department.
Old, worn bunker gear, has met its life time according to NFPA. This gear is in various states of disrepair .
such as rips, tears, broken zippers etc. This gear is gear that has been turned in over the years that has
no value the Miami Fire Department any longer.
Old worn and damged helmets are no longer of use to the Miami Fire Deaprtment. These are helmets
that have been turned in to SSD and replaced for various stages of damage over the years. These
helmets have been in storage for years and have no value to the Miami Fire Department.
