SUBJECT: Off -Duty Police Assignments

In response to a blue page discussion item on the May 28th City Commission agenda, 1 would
like to provide the following inforrnation:
1. The Special Events Unit of the Police Department is responsible for all off -duty
assignments for the Department. Personnel use Off -Duty Track System software to
process all requests for assignmentsand officers may sign up for available jobs through
this system.
2 Officers are permitted to sign-up at will for jobs that are available in the system.
Supervisory personnel in the Special Events Unit monitor off -duty hours for sergeants
and lieutenants to ensure even distribution of assignments.
3. A commanding officer or supervisor working an event is responsible for the officers-
under his or her command. Additionally, Special Events supervisors conduct periodic
spot checks to ensure proper coverage and performance at off -duty locations.
4. Everyone who is assigned to an off -duty job is compensated.
5. All large -scaled events in the City of Miami are required to use off -duty officers. All other
events are permitted to request officers voluntarily.
