HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-12-0450City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-12-0450 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 12-01281a Final Action Date: 11/15/2012 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING RODNEY BARRETO, CHAIRMAN OF THE SUPER BOWL HOST COMMITTEE AND WILLIAM TALBERT, III, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE GREATER MIAMI CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU, TO MAKE ALL EFFORTS NECESSARY TO BRING THE 2016 SUPERBOWL TO DOWNTOWN MIAMI. WHEREAS, South Florida has hosted Super Bowls several times including 1995, 1999, 2007 and 2010; and WHEREAS, South Florida has an opportunity to host the 2016 Super Bowl ("Super Bowl"); and WHEREAS, our community has a proven track record of successfully hosting the Super Bowl; and WHEREAS, over hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the host community during the two (2) weeks of Super Bowl festivities; and WHEREAS, at least 750 million viewers around the world will focus their eyes on our community as they watch the event on television; and WHEREAS, hosting this momentous sporting event in our community provides a tremendous opportunity to boost our tourism industry and local economy; and WHEREAS, the total economic impact on a host community from the Super Bowl is estimated in excess of $300 million; and WHEREAS, several main events will be held in the City of Miami ("City") as part of the Super Bowl; and WHEREAS, the City Commission recognizes the significance of hosting Super Bowl events held in the City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission authorizes Rodney Barreto, Chairman of the Super Bowl Host Committee and William Talbert, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, to make all efforts necessary to bring the 2016 Superbowl to City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File Id: 12-01281 a (Version: 1) Printed On: 12/13/2017 File Number: 12-01281a Enactment Number: R-12-0450 Downtown Miami. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{1} Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
