A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION STRONGLY URGING THE
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO REINSTATE
THE FUNDING FOR THE SCAVENGER BOAT THAT PATROLS THE MIAMI RIVER
AND BISCAYNE BAY FOR THE PURPOSE OF CLEANING THE SHORELINE OF
ACCUMULATED DEBRIS AND LITTER; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY TO THE OFFICIALS STATED HEREIN.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") operates a marine vessel ("Scavenger") for the purposes of
cleaning the shoreline of wind and current -driven debris and litter; and
WHEREAS, until 2009, Miami -Dade County ("County") provided funding for operating the
Scavenger at a cost of $100,000 per year; and
WHEREAS, the City has consistently funded the Scavenger at a rate of $200,000 per year; and
WHEREAS, the City has more than thirteen (13) miles of coastline that are an integral part of the
character of the City and the Greater Miami area; and
WHEREAS, wind -driven debris and litter spoil the scenic beauty of the shoreline, making the City
less attractive to its citizens and tourists; and
WHEREAS, the scenic quality of the coastline is an issue of County -wide significance; and
WHEREAS, City issues of County -wide impact should be shared by the County and the City;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission strongly urges the County Board of County Commissioners to
reinstate the funding for the Scavenger boat that patrols the Miami River and Biscayne Bay for the
purpose of cleaning the shoreline of accumulated debris and litter.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit this Resolution to the County Board of County
Commissioners and the County Mayor.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1}

{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
