HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-12-0425Vop City of Miami '"* Legislation < U R �O Resolution: R-12-0425 File Number: 12-01280 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 10/25/2012 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION IN SUPPORT OF QUESTION NO. 238 ON THE NOVEMBER 6, 2012, MIAMI-DADE COUNTYWIDE GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT, WHICH WOULD AUTHORIZE SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS AT NO PUBLIC EXPENSE TO THE TENNIS CENTER AT CRANDON PARK, RESULTING IN YEAR-ROUND BENEFITS TO MIAMI'S RESIDENTS AND TOURISTS, AND CONTINUE THE GLOBALLY PRESTIGIOUS SONY OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN GREATER MIAMI FOR MANY YEARS TO COME; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY MAYOR CARLOS GIMENEZ, AS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, International Players Championship ("IPC") operates the Sony Open Tennis Tournament ("Tournament"), an annual tennis tournament within the Tennis Center at Crandon Park; and WHEREAS, the Tournament is a premier sporting event and showcases the Greater Miami ("Miami") community throughout the world; and WHEREAS, preserving and promoting this annual event is of the utmost importance to Miami and Miami -Dade County ("County"), their residents, the broader community, South Florida and Crandon Park; and WHEREAS, Article 7 of the County's Home Rule Charter restricts certain development within County parks, including Crandon Park, requiring a public referendum prior to certain construction approvals and existing lease extensions; and WHEREAS, IPC has advised the County of the need to construct new facilities and expand the Tennis Center's existing facilities, not to exceed in size and in the approximate location and the previous temporary Tournament facilities, and modify IPC's existing agreements with the County, with terms no less favorable to the County than those already governing, in order to continue to provide for Miami a world-class tennis event; and WHEREAS, IPC has offered to construct such improvement funded solely by Tennis Center and Tournament revenues and private funds; and WHEREAS, IPC and the County wish to submit to the electors of Miami and the County a referendum Question No. 238 that would authorize the County to undertake such steps as may be required by law to accomplish capital improvements and Tournament lease modifications that will significantly improve public amenities within Crandon Park and preserve the Tournament for many additional years in the future; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, City of Miand Page 1 of 2 File Id. 12-01280 (Version: 1) Printed On: 12/12/2017 File Number: 12-01280 Enactment Number: R-12-0425 FLORIDA; Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges voters to endorse, support and vote affirmatively to approve Question No. 238 on the November 6, 2012, Countywide General Election Ballot which would authorize significant improvements at no public expense to the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, resulting in year-round benefits to Miami's residents and tourists, and continue the globally prestigious Tournament in Miami for many years to come. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, with the City's authorization that this Resolution may be utilized in any and all efforts, public and private, to secure approval of Question No. 238 on the November 6, 2012, Countywide general election ballot. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1 } Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
