Subject: "Request to Accept the 2011 SAFER Grant, establish necessary account codes, and Hire a total

Purpose of Item:
To accept the SAFER Grant in an amount of $3,646,800, and set up a Special Project Titled, "SAFER
GRANT -2011", to immediately hire twenty-five (25) sworn firefighters.

Background Information: (continued)
On Friday August 24th, 2012, the sixteenth (16th) round of the FY 2011 SAFER grants was awarded to
22 Fire Departments throughout the United States.
Since 2005, SAFER has awarded over a thousand grants totaling more than $500 million to Fire
Departments across the country to help to increase staffing of frontline firefighters.
The SAFER grant is designed to assist local Fire Departments meet the minimum standards of the
NFPA, thereby increasing the cadre of firefighters and enhancing their ability to obtain 24 hour
staffing, thus assuring their community has adequate protection from fire and fire -related hazards.
SAFER grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security ("DHS") Preparedness
Directorate through its Office of Grants and Training, in cooperation with the United States Fire
Administration, also within the Preparedness Directorate.
The Department of Fire -Rescue was awarded the SAFER Grant and is requesting authorization to hire
twenty-five (25) new firefighters. The amount awarded to the Department of Fire -Rescue is in an
amount not to exceed $3,646,800.00 to be used for staffing. The term of said grant is November 301h,
2012 to November 29, 2014.
