It is recommended that the Miami City Commission adopt the attached Resolution, with
attachment(s), establishing a new Special Revenue Project entitled: "FY 12 Solving Cold Cases with
DNA," consisting of a grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, in
the amount of $500,000; authorizing the City Manager to execute the grant agreement, in
substantially the attached form, and any other documents in order to implement the acceptance and
administration of said grant award.
Background Information:
The grant award will allow the City of Miami Police Department to review, prioritize, examine and
evaluate homicide cold cases to identify physical evidence with the potential to yield DNA that can be
submitted for testing. The grant funding will be utilized to cover overtime personnel, travel and
operating costs associated with the Solving Cold Cases with DNA program. The grant funding period
is from October 1, 2012, through March 31, 2014. This award does not require any local match;
however, $774.00 in non-federal funds will be required to offset the difference between the $500,774
approved program budget and the $500,000 provided through federal funding.
