Re: City Of Miami Special Events Fund
Dear Commissioner Samoff,
We have been informed that there is $18,000 remaining in the City-wide Special Events' fund that can be
allocated to events that meet the criteria (historical and/or cultural). _King. Mango Productions, Inc.
(KMP) would like to apply for these funds to help produce the King Mango Strut Parade and off -set
$18,500 in permit expenses (police, solid waste, etc) and permit -related expenses (barricades, insurance,
security) required by the City. Please send us the application or information required to apply for these
funds and advise of any deadlines that may apply.
This year's parade will be our 31and is scheduled for Sunday, December 30, at 2 p.m. It is a parody and
satire of holiday parades that has contributed greatly for 30 years to marketing Miami and Coconut Grove
as a fun, quirky destination. Our parade garners local, national and even international coverage on
television, radio and in print. "The Strut" has become more than a parade — it's a happening!
Our entire parade budget is under $35K. It is a small budget for the size and scope of the event, KMP is
a Florida not -for -profit 501c3 tax exempt organization. It depends 100% on its volunteers and in -kind
services to help make this very popular event possible. We do not charge entry fees for any floats or
groupsto be in the parade. We reach out to the community to invite groups and organizations from all
parts of Miami that do not participate in parades because of entry fees. We do not sell tickets to view the
parade. We do not have any food, drinks or merchandise vendors competing with the businesses in the
area. We have people that travel specifically to attend the parade and stay at local hotels.
The King Mango Strut is worthy of the City of Miami's support. We have been praised by the media as
"the satirical parade that always captures the spirit of the community," and "for proving that the most
valuable commodity in South Florida is its great sense of humor." Help us to continue our great Miami
tradition of making sense of the sublime and the ridiculous and to show off Miami in an upbeat and
positive way.

Re: Close out for 2011 Signature Event Grant
Dear Marketing Committee Members & BID Board Members,
Attached please find our affidavit and income/expense statement for the 2011 King Mango Strut
Parade per your requesi We have met the committee's requirement of matching funds.
When you review this close-out and the BID's $13,500 contribution to this event as it relates to
improving business in Coconut Grove, please consider that not only is there a tangible return on your
investment many times over your contribution but that our 100% volunteer organization has
contributed greatly for 30 years to the Coconut Grove brand that showcases Coconut Grove as a fun
place to go. We have outlived many better financed events.
In spite of the 10% cut to our grant amount, 50% increase in police services costs and 24% increase in
the BID's Supplemental Fee requiring us to cut street closure hours, we were able to keep Commodore
Plaza closed until 6 p.m. to keep the party going so people would stay longer and spend money in the
Grove. Reports from the bars and restaurants were that they were full of MangoHeads and parade
attendees as late as 8 pm, 4.5 hours after the parade ended.
We do not keep track of the value of all the in -kind donations in material, labor and services but we
can say without hesitation that if we were to pay for all the material, labor, promotion and
entertainment that put on this event, the Strut would cost three-four times as much. The 1st Strut was
created as a counter to the mega expensive -genetically -modified Orange Bowl Parade. We proved
then and still today that you don't have to spend big bucks to put on a parade that attracts thousands of
people, lining the streets.
Since we had no vendors competing with Coconut Grove merchants, all the money that people spent
on food and drinks went straight to the Coconut Grove bars and restaurants. We even encouraged the
bars and restaurants in extending their liquor licenses so that they could bring their chairs and table out
onto the streets and be able to serve drinks outside their restaurants. The participating restaurants --
felt that the $100 permit fee and the 2-3 hours to process the permit was well worth it,
We hope that we can continue to count on the BlD's support of our great Coconut Grove tradition of
making sense of the sublime and the ridiculous.
