A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING PRESIDENT
BARACK OBAMA AND THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO ABOLISH VISA
REQUIREMENTS FOR BRAZILIAN TOURISTS SEEKING TO TRAVEL TO THE
UNITED STATES FOR TOURISM, BUSINESS, OR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES;
DIRECTING CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE
JOHN BOEHNER, SENATE MAJORITY LEADER HARRY REID, SENATORS BILL
NELSON AND MARCO RUBIO AND THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY UNITED STATES
CONGRESSIONAL LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION.
WHEREAS, Brazil, a nation of more than 200 million people with a gross domestic product of more
than 1 trillion dollars represents a great trading partner for the United States; and
WHEREAS, Miami, as the Gateway to the Americas, is in the best possible location to receive
visitors from Brazil, whether for business or pleasure; and
WHEREAS, Brazilians seeking to travel to the United States must first obtain a visa, which is an
additional expense in both time and money; and
WHEREAS, according to a June 3, 2011 Time.com article, Brazilians spend more in the United
States per capita than any other nationality; and
WHEREAS, in 2010 Brazilians spent over 1 billion dollars in Miami -Dade County; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the City of Miami ("City") to break down international barriers and
foster an environment that makes it easier to bring international tourists and business people to the
City;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA;
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges President Barack Obama and the United States
Congress to abolish visa requirements for. Brazilians seeking to travel to the United States for tourism,
business, or recreational purposes.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to President
Barack Obama, Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senators
Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio and the Miami -Dade County United States Congressional Legislative

Delegation.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1}

Footnotes:
{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
