Purpose of Item: AN ORDINANCE OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AMENDING CHAPTER 10/ ARTICLE IV OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, ENTITLED 'REGISTRATION OF VACANT, BLIGHTED, UNSECURED OR ABANDONED STRUCTURES", MORE PARTICULARLY BY AMENDING SECTION 10-63 ENTITLED "RESPONSIBILITIES OF OWNERS OF VACANT, BLIGHTED, UNSECURED OR ABANDONED STRUCTURES" TO ADD METALLIC COVERINGS TO THE LIST OF MATERIALS USED TO SECURE 'BLIGHTED, UNSECURED OR ABANDONED STRUCTURES AND PROVIDING FOR THE ENFORCEMENT THEREOF; CONTAINING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE, AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Background Information: The City is working to decrease the incidents of crime associated with unsecured, vacant, blighted and abandoned structures in order to restore safety and accessibility to its neighborhoods. Review of recent crime statistics reveal that there- are a number of properties in which the Police Department receives multiple calls for service for a number of criminal activities. In an effort to further reduce and effectively abate certain incidents of crime that occur in these structures, the Administration proposes to add metallic coverings to the list of approved materials to secure said structures.
