HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-12-0168City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-12-0168 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 12-00450 Final Action Date: 4/12/2012 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING THE SECURING OF VACANT AND ABANDONED PRIVATE BUILDINGS AS A UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT FUNDING ELIGIBLE ACTIVITY; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE FEDERAL AGENCIES DESIGNATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, the increase in the number of vacant and abandoned homes has a deteriorating effect on the neighborhoods in the City of Miami ("City") causing a decrease in property values; and WHEREAS, vacant, blighted, unsecured and abandoned structures perpetuate a nuisance because of their susceptibility to temporary occupancy by transients, and criminal activity such as drug trafficking, drug use, prostitution, vandalism and other serious crimes, as well as fire safety hazards; and WHEREAS, the City is working to decrease the incidents of crime associated with unsecured, vacant, blighted and abandoned structures throughout its communities; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the securing of vacant and abandoned private buildings as an eligible activity for use of United States Department of Housing and Urban Development ("U.S. HUD") Community Development Block Grant ("CDBG") funding; BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Miami City Commission supports the securing of vacant and abandoned private buildings as a U. S. HUD CDBG funding eligible activity. Section 2. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the members of Congress and to the Secretary of U.S. HUD. Section 3.
