Dear Friends of Do The Right Thing:
Happy New Year! We have had a very successful 2011-2012 school
year to date. Online nominations are pouring in as our new online
ONLY submission requirement was launched and promoted. Change
is never easy but not only are we saving trees, we also truly believe the
process is easier for our nominators once they get the hang of it. For
our hard working school personnels, we are also trying to do small
incentives to encourage your continued support. Monthly drawings for
prizes such as $25 gift cards to Olive Garden and Best Buy have
hopefully encouraged you to keep nominating! For further details on
these incentives, please go to our website's homepage under Message
to Coordinators. The school year is already halfway over and we will
soon be gearing up for the Do The Right Thing Summer Salute Awards
Banquet in June. Our top 90 student winners and their families will be
invited to reunite and celebrate their achievements this school year.
Our Schools of the Year will also be announced - the elementary,
middle and senior high school which had the most Top 10 winners this
year! Thanks, as always, for your support of Do The Right Thing and
remember, if you know a child out there who has "done the right thing,"

Seven Hundred Students
Take A Pledge Against
Violence
With violence in schools
increasingly making
headlines, 5th grade
students from eight City of
Miami elementary schools
pledged to welcome a new
school year without
violence. On September 30,
2011 approximately 700
students recited a "Victory
Against Violence" pledge led
by Chief of Police Manuel
Orosa during the annual Do
The Right Thing "Back
Without A Bang!" Youth
Rally Against Violence at
Jungle Island. Several
schools also performed
unique presentations
against violence by
performing skits, songs and
dances. The "Back Without
A Bang!" Youth Rally
Against Violence was created by Do The Right Thing to address the
national problem of school violence and encourage a more peaceful
environment in our schools. Whether it is by taking the pledge or
through song and dance, these students took the right steps towards
ensuring this school year went off "without a bang."
Rhyme Against Crime
Elementary and Middle School Students Use Their Skills on the
Mic to Promote Doing the Right Thing!
While most of the rap we hear these days focuses an a life of crime and
other negative behavior, elementary and middle school students are
proving that rap can have a positive message too DTRT's annual "Rap
It Up!" contest challenged Miami -Dade students from 3rd grade through
6th grade to submit their anti -crime lyrics for a chance to win iPod
Hanes and other great prizes. Approximately 40 students were invited
to the preliminary auditions in front of a panel of judges- Special thanks
to our distinurshed judges from the Miami Police Department: Sergio
Guerrero. Marc Paul. Lynda Roberts, Aileen Rodriguez, Paule Villard
and Annette Wilson From these 40 auditions 11 lucky rappers
attended the finals on December 16. Judges included DTRT President
2012 Calendar
Fundraiser Huge
Success
Female officers from the City of Miami
Police Department momentarily put
their uniforms aside and donned period
outfits from the early 1900's to present
day all in the name of charity! Do The
Right Thing teamed up with the Miami
Police Departments Public Information
Office to produce the "Women In Blue"
2012 calendar with all proceeds
benefitting DTRT.
The calendar was officially unveiled at
the Blue Martini at Mary Brickell Village
in October with all of the officer models
on hand for autographs. We can't thank
them enough for their time and effort on
this endeavor.
To date, the fundraiser has netted over
$6,000 for DTRT. Special thanks to the
following individuals who made this
project possible: Ronald Rahming,
Keandra Simmons and Napier
Velazquez from the Calendar
Organizing Committee as well as Josie
Poitier and Willie Moreno for additional
assistance in securing sponsors.
