Director Chief ` i'i , j City Manager Page 1 of 1 The Department of Federal Emergency Management Agency ("FEMA"), U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Grants Management Branch, has awarded the "Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award for Fiscal Year 2011" to the City of Miami Department of Fire -Rescue. The grant is going to assist the Department of Fire -Rescue in purchasing Personal Protective Equipment such as Hazmat Level A Suits (Chemical and Biological Suits) and Exhaust Extraction System for Fire Stations No. 2, 4, 7, 8 and 9, that will provide the protection from carcinogenic exhaust for its firefighters and the public that sometime use the facilities for civic events or seek shelter during hurricanes. Annually, the Department of Fire -Rescue answers over 90,000 calls from 14 stations. These calls, within the densely populated urban environment of the City of Miami, constitute an invaluable service provision to the almost million individuals who live, work, or visit the City of Miami on a daily basis. The daily firefighting challenges of structural fires, car fires, building fires, chemical and hazmat fires, and arsons are complicated by a multiplicity of factors, while its geographic location presents a dynamic emergency that the Department of Fire -Rescue must be prepared to adjust to. Additionally, the Department of Fire -Rescue must respond to fallout from political turmoil from other countries, terrorist attacks and wildfires. Consequently, to protect the firefighters and the public we serve, each firefighter must have the requisite protective equipment to safely and effectively manage fire -related emergencies. During other emergencies, particularly weather -related emergencies, city residents and workers utilize fire stations as refuges for public safety. Moreover, with the support of said grant, the firefighters will be able to respond and to assist the community during emergencies, ultimately protecting the health and safety of Fire -Rescue personnel and the citizens.
