As a practicing Architect, my experience includes renovation and remodeling of commercial buildings in Historic Districts. Commercial buildings present a challenge in that the uses of the same building can vary from retail to office while each new use presents its own requirements and restrictions. Design solutions are needed that are sympathetic to the original character while allowing a different and varied program from the original design. My experience with residential projects includes new infill, remodeling and additions to contributing homes in historic districts. I have also worked on the historical designation of a single family home. While appreciating the character of the historic district, there is a responsibility to create an addition that blends in without being mistaken for the original. The balance created between the old and new should be complimentary and emphasize the significant features of the residence. In all projects there is an aspect beyond the built structure and it includes the natural and living environment. These natural elements are too often ignored or discarded and I believe we should be conscious of our entire environment.
