Wysong III, City Attorne}�—mot" ' % for DATE: September 25, 2024 RE: Substitution of RE.10 on the September 26, 2024, City Commission Meeting Street Naming — Monty Trainer File No.: 16604 Item RE.10 on the September 25, 2024, City Commission Meeting Agenda proposes codesignating the portion of Aviation Avenue extending southeast from the intersection of Aviation Avenue and South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, as "Monty Trainer Way" in honor of Monty Trainer's significant contributions to the Coconut Grove community. It directs the City Clerk to transmit certified copies of the resolution to relevant departments and public agencies, and evaluates the recognition of Mr. Trainer's philanthropic, cultural, and civic engagement through this honor. The Legislation is being substituted to revise certain sections of the whereas clauses to provide further information about Mr. Trainer's contributions to the City and community as a whole. cc. WHEREAS, Monty Trainer was born in Maine on November 10, 1935, raised in Key West, Florida and moved to Miami in 1968 after graduating from the University of Florida; and WHEREAS, Monty is one of Miami's most recognizable names and personas, having established the legendary Monty's Restaurant Raw Bar and Marine in Coconut Grove in September of 1969, which is still thriving today; and WHEREAS, Monty has been a driving force in Miami's cultural, philanthropic, and arts communities for over 50 years, having served as a Founding Member of the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District, Board Member and Chairman of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, and Founder and Chairman of the Annual Big Orange New Year's Eve Celebration in Downtown Miami, he also serves on the City of Miami's Virginia Key Advisory Board; and WHEREAS, Monty served on the First Sport and Exposition Authority, which built the Miami Arena, where the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers teams were founded, and where the University of Miami's basketball team was able to return to play in 1985; and WHEREAS, Monty as chairman of the Greater Miami Host Committee work with the City of Miami to bring two Miss Universe pageants and the Miss USA pageant to the James L. Knight Center, which each event included a 3-hour national broadcast; and WHEREAS, Monty's passion for the arts is perhaps best personified by his many years of work on the annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival where he has served as Board Member, Chairman, and President for decades having just retired after the 60th Anniversary of the Festival; and WHERAS, Monty has represented Miami -Dade County in Tallahassee at "Dade Days" during the State's annual legislative policy meeting days where he cooks paella for thousands of attendees; and WHEREAS, Monty continues to serve Miami -Dade County and its residents as a Member of Miami -Dade Cultural Affairs Council of over twenty years; and WHEREAS, Monty's commitment to fostering education is second to none, having served as Chairman, and still current board member, of the New World School for the Performing Arts, as a Grand Founder of the University of Miami, as an inductee into the University of Florida Hall of Fame, and as a Member of the prestigious Florida Blue Key and Honorary Iron Arrow Society of the University of Miami; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami City Commission wishes to honor Monty Trainer's many contributions to our community by codesignating a portion of Aviation Avenue in Monty's honor; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his many contributions, it is fitting and proper to codesignate the portion of Aviation Avenue extending southeast of the intersection of Aviation Avenue and South Bayshore Drive, as the site of Monty's Coconut Grove, as "Monty Trainer Way," in accordance with Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended ("City Code"), to honor his enduring legacy in the Coconut Grove community; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 54-137 of the City Code, the requirements therein are hereby waived by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commission; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this section. Section 2. Pursuant to Section 54-137 of the City Code, the requirements therein are hereby waived by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commission. Section 3. The portion of Aviation Avenue extending southeast of the intersection of Aviation Avenue and South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, is hereby codesignated as "Monty Trainer Way," pursuant to Section 54-137 of the City Code. Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
