The Huntington's Disease Society of America/South Florida Chapter is having its 19th Annual Huntington's Disease Triathlon which will be held at Miami Marine Stadium on August 1, 2010. Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disease that causes certain nerve cells in the brain to waste away. People are born with the defective gene, but symptoms usually don't appear until middle age. Early symptoms of HD may include uncontrolled movements, clumsiness or balance problems. Later, HD can take away the ability to walk, talk or swallow. Some people stop recognizing family members. Others are aware of their environment and are able to express emotions. If one of your parents has Huntington's disease, you have a 50-50 chance of getting it. A blood test can tell if you have the HD gene and will develop the disease. Genetic counseling can help you weigh the risks and benefits of taking the test. There is no cure. Medicines can help manage some of the symptoms, but cannot slow down or stop the disease. The Society is requesting your support of this event by waiving a portion of the City of Miami set up fee. The permit application has been completed and the Society paid $1,000.00 for the use of the facility on August 1st. In addition to $1,000.00 there is a charge of $1,000.00 per day for set up ($2,000). The society is renting bleachers and a show stage from the City and would like to have them delivered on Friday, July 30 along with supplies needed for the event. Some set-up may be done on Friday but the majority will be done on Saturday, July 31st. The City of Miami is requiring that they pay an additional $2,000.00 for the use of the facility for our deliveries and set up. This event is their only fundraiser for the year, it is produced by volunteers and all the proceeds from this event are used to fund research in finding a cure or treatment for Huntington's disease. They realize that the City eMiami like so many of us are financially struggling and they did not request the fee waiver for race day but if you would support this event by waiving the set up day it would be greatly appreciated.
